Today’s Topic is FUN

I am enjoying the October Ultimate Blog Challenge and it is now in the third week, heading down the home stretch.  Every day, the challenge host sends an email with a suggested topic. While sometimes I have other blog ideas already, I do like to use the challenge topics.  Today’s topic is fun!   It’s to blog about something fun in your business!   For me that’s very easy since I love what I do.

Some people dread getting up and going to work, they don’t like their job or they don’t like their job assignment.  For me it’s different,  I love what I do so much it’s hard to even call it a job. Hubby and I own an interior decorating shop and the fun comes from so many different aspects of our work.  First, it seems like every project we do is different so we never get tired of doing the same thing over and over.

When a client is ready for window treatments, the first step is to “survey the issue”.   We got to their home or condo, see what is in the room already and what style window treatment will be perfect design.  Next we measure the windows and pick out fabrics.  Now here is the super fun part!  When I design window treatments, I don’t use patterns, I just sketch a style and go from there.  Once the design and sketch is done, hubby starts cutting the fabric, then we stitch it together and have a completed window treatment that is ready to install.

Some of the treatments are basic valances or swags while others are quite unique.  One client had a guest bath with umbrella pictures hanging and bright colored towels.  We came up with an umbrella styled cornice with the same colors in her towels for over the tub and she loved it!

This was another fun treatment. The client has an Oriental theme so we shaped a cornice like a pagoda.

This was a fun project the first time we made the bedding and drapes with a sheer wall treatment as a headboard.  It was even more fun when we repainted the room when the little girl was older and wanted bright colors. But instead of needing a new wall treatment, we just flipped the sheer to a different color on the front .  Now this was totally a fun project to complete.

This was one of our elegant treatments that was fun to create. The client wanted something not too formal but didn’t want casual either.  We come up with paisley cornices, draped with faux silk swags and matching drapes in the family room with swags and cascades in their casual eating area.  It’s fun to come up with ideas and make our clients happy and excited.

There are many times when the treatments are installed when the homeowner is away and it’s so much fun to get a phone call from excited clients saying how happy they are.   Other times, if they are home, we politely ask them if they want to go in another room until installation is completed.  When they stay and watch, they don’t get the “whole” picture so it’s better to wait until it’s up, we call them back in the room so they can see the beautiful transformation. It’s fun to watch their eyes as they first enter the room, the eyes tell it all!

When someone asks if we like our job, I tell them we have been doing it for 50 years and it is so much fun it doesn’t even seem like work.

Do you have something fun in your business or job?  Maybe you don’t work and have fun in other ways.  So what’s your fun?

WOW! I love the drapes you made! My grandma did that also. She used to make beautiful draperies, and your post brought back wonderful memories. 🙂

Awww, I’m glad I was able to bring back memories for you! I learned the trade from my grandmother and unfortunately it’s slowing becoming a lost art. I think people would rather buy things than learn how to make their own. I have taught all our 7 grandchildren and our oldest great grandson to make pillows and when they get older, teach them a few basics. They will never be interested in sewing as a business, but they will at least be able to hem or sew on a button. Thanks for stopping by Ruthanne.

  2. My idea of fun is listening to a brand new track, sometimes new to the world/other times new to me, and having my mind blown and having a new favourite band. I also like watching little dogs run, weird but enjoyable.

Not weird at all Nick. The cool thing about fun is everyone has their own ways to make it happen. With all your music knowledge, I can see why it is fun to you with a new band! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your fun!

I’ve always said it’s hard to call it work when it’s something you enjoy so much. Thanks for stopping by Savvy Age.

As long as we have to work, we have to make the best of it. I really lucked out with my “job” since I enjoy it so much plus we have such wonderful clients, so that’s an extra bonus. Thanks for visiting Savvy Age.

I love this post Martha because you described what you do. In my post, I talked about work as being fun, and this post confirms what Iw as thinking all along.

Some people seem to always complain about having to go to work. But that’s just the nature of the beast, we have to work to survive. It just happens that when you love you work, it doesn’t even seem like a job. Thanks for stopping by Sumudu.
