TACHYCARDIA

This is the first part of the health issues our 20 year old granddaughter has been going through.

The explanation of Tachycardia is a heart rate of more than 100 beats per minute for adults.  When the heart beats very rapid, there is not enough time for the heart to fill before it contracts so blood flow to the body is compromised. This can be caused when electrical signals in the heart’s upper chambers fire abnormally.

Some of the symptoms are:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Rapid heartbeat or “palpitations”
  • Angina(chest pain)
  • Shortness of breath

Back in mid May our 20 year old granddaughter went to the doctor for swollen glands and while there she mentioned about her high heart rate that she has had for about five to six years.  She was always active but her heart raced and when she would stop to get her breath, her father would just say she was out of shape and needed to exercise more. So while the doctor checked her glands, he also check her heart rate and it was 155 BPM.  They did an EKG on her at the office and then had her go to the hospital for further testing and set her up with an appointment with a cardiologist. While at the hospital, more tests and scans were done and it was determined that she has tachycardia. Our granddaughter is a very tiny person so they put her on a low dose of a beta blocker.  Thankfully they have helped lower her heart rate so it’s not so alarming.  But what we found out next was very alarming.  When the technician was reading the ultra sound and scans of her heart, they found the top part of her left lung was collapsed.  This was as much of a concern as her heart.

The doctor ordered more scans and tests and those results were quite shocking. What looked like a collapsed lung on the first scan turned out to be a 4″ mass in her lung.  Her next visit was to an oncologist for more testing of the mass.  We are now waiting for more results and praying they are what we want to hear.

If you pray, please keep Alexandra in your prayers.  She means so much to “pop” and me.  Thank you all.
