Never Too Old To Learn

Never Too Old To Learn

“If you want to explore deeper oceans, you first have to leave sight of the shore”

I have always said a person is never to old to learn new things.  In our business of 49 years, we seem to always come up with new ideas or new ways to make something.  I feel that keeping your mind working, keeps us going. I was reading a blog posted on the Ultimate Blog Challenge from a fellow blogger about lifelong learning.  This is the interesting link where she goes in depth about how this is possible.

I never realized it was so scientific as to how we are able to learn no matter what our age.   When I was 60 years old, my hubby and I were discussing health insurance with our agent.   Since hubby is on many medications due to his severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, I asked about the infusion that is administered at a doctors office being under Plan B on Medicare. The agent  “thought” it would be under Part D, the drug plan. I pulled out the book and showed where it mentioned a drug administered in a doctor office is Part B.  After calling the main office, and going over this with the manager who wasn’t sure either,  they finally decided I was correct.  The agent jokingly said I should take the insurance course and become an agent.   Well, I took his joke seriously for a few reasons.  First, I wanted to learn the correct information, not so much to be a selling agent, but so I could educate others that might have similar questions without having a definite answer and second to see if at 60 years old I could still learn.   I signed up for the online course but was a big shocked when I realized the course was not only Health, but General Insurance, Insurance Regulation, Life Insurance, disability, and Annuities.  I signed up, received my text books and got to work.  When the course was completed I had to go to the State testing location for the test. So in I walk and look around at all the young folks, maybe the oldest was 25 years old if that.  I completed the test, a message pops up on the computer and asks if I’m sure I’m done. I click yes, then another message pops up asking if I’m SURE I’m done.  I figured that meant I messed up royally but I’ve always said if you aren’t sure of an answer, don’t go back and change it.  So I clicked done and waited and waited, sweating bullets while the score was calculated.  The test administrator called me up to the counter, handed me my certificate and said, “Congratulations on passing your exam with a score of 92.”  I walked out with my certificate in hand, crying because I was so excited that I passed but more so that I was actually able to still learn!  So don’t ever think you can’t learn new things at any age.   The saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks doesn’t apply to people.

  1. wow look at you! Way to go on passing that exam! You’re right, you’re never too old to learn. In fact, I think we should continue to keep learning throughout our lives. Did you end up actually become an insurance agent though? Thanks for sharing.

    • Martha says:

Thanks Paulette, I have so many stories about my learning experiences. I became an agent but I could only talk about the company I was an agent for. I mainly wanted to be able to educate others on the options and help if they had questions, especially those in the golden years. But it was very interesting and exciting to realize I could do this at my age. Thanks for visiting!

WAY TO GO! Super you passed that exam so well! I’m very impressed. And thanks so much for your kind comments on my post.

Thanks Ruthanne! I’m not only meeting wonderful bloggers but I’m learning so much from their blogs which in turn give me more ideas for my writings! I saw the link for this that you added to your blog, that’s so cool! Thanks for the add and thanks for the visit!

Oh, I took that test! It’s a real bugger. Good job! And I agree, insurance today can be so confusing.

Also… as a nurse, I just thought I’d let you know that when we get patients in our hospital who are in their sixties or seventies… our usual comment is dismay that they are ill along with the comment, “But they’re so YOUNG!”

Age means different things to different people!

    • Martha says:

Not sure if you were as nervous as I was when I took the exam but I actually did better on the life insurance and annuities segments, things that I wasn’t even interested in. When I was in grade school, if a teacher was in the 30’s, they were considered “old”. Now some of the teachers look so young they could pass for students! I think the older we become, age is not important but learning still is. Thanks for visiting Elisabeth!

That’s wonderful, Martha! They also say that middle aged to elderly who go back to college make the best grades – perhaps that is because we are focused, and we are highly motivated. And, as one of your commenters points out, age means different things to different people.

    • Martha says:

Well, that may be true because my grades in school weren’t that high! LOL But I’m so glad I took this course to keep my brain in the thinking mode. I always say we may grow older, but we don’t have to grow up. Thanks for visiting Alana!

Congratulations on passing that test. The course sounds as if it was very difficult. Right now, I am focusing on learning more about drawing and painting. I really feel that we can learn new things at any age.

    • Martha says:

That sounds exciting Alice about your drawings and paintings. Yes, we can learn new things at any age and I love the challenge that comes with it. Thanks for stopping by.

Still early in the game (at 30), but my hope is to be a learner to my grave. 🙂 Congratulations on your success on the test, and thanks for the link on lifelong learning. Checking it out now. –Sondi

That’s a great goal Sondi! You will have many more years to learn but it’s great to expand our knowledge at any age. Thanks for visiting!

  7. Lee-Anne says:

Great work Martha! It sound like you will be putting your knowledge to good use.

    • Martha says:

Thanks Lee-Anne. I would much rather educate others to help them get that most and correct information than be an agent. That’s what I love the most, helping others. Thanks for stopping by, have a wonderful day.

So inspired by you and your work ethic. You’re amazing grandma. Love you!

    • Martha says:

It seems like my grandson inspired me CJ! You are an amazing grandson, guess that’s what makes us double amazing! Love you too and wouldn’t be were I am on my blogging if not for you!
