Mom’s Memory Garden

Mother’s Day is in a few weeks and hubby and I have been working on my Mom’s Memory Garden. Mom passed away on January 15, 2000 and we planted a garden with some of the flowers we received from her funeral. Over the years it became so overgrown with the Carolina Jasmine that was growing up the shed, the other flowers were drowning out. So we decided to give her garden a face lift for Mother’s Day.

Everything was removed except the beautiful Azalea which started as a tiny bush back in 2000 and is now gorgeous when in full bloom. We added new garden soil and the planting began. The first to be planted were two red rose bushes, a beautiful yellow lily and a few purple perennials. I like to start slowly until I see how much room we have left. We added a breathtaking pink rose in the center of the garden and while they are small this year, the knockout roses grow very well here so I’m sure they will double in size by next season. After adding red bark mulch, I was so happy with the garden and hoping my mom would be looking down smiling at all her beautiful flowers. The garden looked beautiful with all the flowers for mom.

I also made a cross from some left over lumber, painted it and glued the latest penny that mom sent down from heaven to the center of the cross. Now Mom’s Memory Garden was complete.

No, it’s not finished yet! Saturday morning I woke up to a text message that Lowe’s Hardware had gift cards available if you text the number listed. I received a $5.00 card and hubby got a $25.00 one! The gift cards had to be used only on Saturday so we ran to Lowe’s and picked up a few garden supplies. When I got home I posted on Facebook, partly as a joke, that if anyone had gift cards they weren’t going to use they could send them to me. I was gifted nine gift cards from my Facebook family!

Back to Lowe’s we went and I picked out a variety of colorful annual flowers. So with the help of my Facebook family, they helped add more flowers to the mom’s garden and they didn’t cost anything!

We had a few empty hanging baskets from last year so I made them up with geraniums and little purple flowers in one and petunias and another kind of purple flowers in the other. We hung them on the side of the shed right above the roses. I added the larger pot of geraniums to the garden in a iron holder. I added the other two delicate purple plants between the perennials. All these beautiful plants were thanks to my friends sending me their Lowe’s gift cards!

To top off Mom’s Memory Garden, my granddaughter Alexandra, Stevie and Lia Faith gave me some beautiful plaques, the garden was the perfect spot for them.

The finishing touch was when I added little twinkling lights around the edge of the garden. It looks so pretty at night with the lights shining so mom can look down from above and smile at her beautiful garden just in time for Mother’s Day. I love and miss you mom, Happy Heavenly Mother’s Day!

This is a poem I wrote for my mom when the flowers starting blooming in her garden last year.

The three top pictures are before, during and after. The yellow lily is one of my favorite shots. I didn’t even see the number 7 in the lily when I took the picture. I think this must be a sign, we have 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren! I hope mom loves her updated memory garden.

I also made my mom a Penny Plaque for Mother’s Day. I took the pennies that she has sent down from heaven and made this penny plaque, outlined in our dried rose buds.
