Kitchen Utensil Organizer

When you need more drawer space, a kitchen utensil organizer that sits on the counter is a good alternative. Now most people would run to the store or go online and order one. Me on the other hand being frugal, cheap or just saving the landfill would make one!

I ordered some cookies that came in 6 small cups and they were in a box with 6 holes, one for each cup. When I received them, I knew I wanted to make something from the box but I wasn’t sure what so I put to the side. Shortly after that I came up with the idea of turning the box with 6 holes into a place to hold my kitchen utensils which in turn would give me more drawer space.

My next step was to find a box a tiny bit smaller than the top so I could set the top on the base box. That wasn’t an easy task. I get packages almost daily but none of the boxes were the right size. I finally received one that was perfect in the width but it was about an inch too long. After studying the box I realized it was an easy fix. I cut off the flaps and pulled the box apart at the corner, refolded the sides to the size needed and reglued it together.

Of course no project would be complete without duct tape! Since the bottom of the box wasn’t super sturdy, I added duct tape to give it more support. Then to hide the tape, I took one of the flaps I cut off and use that on the inside bottom of the box. It worked perfect, I have my new kitchen utensil organizer!

No one wants a box on the counter that has writing all over it so my next plan was to cover it with a decorative adhesive liner. I started with the outside of the box, then covered the top. With the holes, I wanted to have the the edges covered also so I covered the entire top, holes and all. Next I cut a circle around the adhesive liner about 3/4″ from the edge. I snipped all around the circle about 1/8″ from the edge of the circle on the box top. I folded the adhesive liner over to the back. My organizer was finished. Oh wait, as I looked through the holes, I could see the unfinished sides of the box. I can’t have that so I covered the inside of the box also! Okay now my kitchen utensil organizer is finished!

Now I have the perfect solution to my over crowded kitchen drawers and it’s so much easier to find what I need! The decorative adhesive liner cost less than $5.00 and I have plenty left for other projects. So what do you think, am I frugal, cheap, crafty, clever, ingenious or just crazy for saving money with boxes?

  1. I lack counter space, so your idea won’t work. But, I loved the concept!
