How To Stretch and Save Money

How To Stretch and Save Money

I love sharing how to stretch and save money to others.  No, I’m not talking about stretching for exercising, I’m talking about getting a small piece of meat and making it stretch for a family meal.  It’s like a game to me when I go to the meat department and see what meats I can get with the yellow discount tag on it. The other day I found a .65 pound package of  Top Round Beef Steak for $5.06, but the best part was the $2.00 quick sale coupon attached to the package.  So for $3.06 I had to get it, not even knowing how I would prepare it. They also had 8 pack hotdog rolls on sale for 78 cents, so I picked a pack with hotdogs.  But when planning what to have for dinner, I decided to make steak sandwiches on hotdog rolls.

I started by slicing the steak into very thin strips and you would be amazed at how much more meat it turns into.   I also sliced up an onion and used some pepper I had previously sliced up and froze.

I sautéed the vegetables in a small amount of olive oil while I stir fried the steak slices.  It only took about 5 minutes cooking time since the steak was so thin.  Next I added the steak to the onions and pepper and mixed everything together.

I love cheese so after I added the steak and vegetables to a hotdog roll, I added shredded mozzarella cheese to it and melted it in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Look at how much sliced steak the one small piece turned into. From that one small package of steak, I was able to get enough meat for five hotdog rolls!

So figuring the cost, the steak was $3.06, the rolls were 78 cents, the onion was maybe 25 cents and the pepper was about the same plus maybe 15 cents worth of cheese. This came to a grand total for the five delicious steak sandwiches of $4.49.  This is just one of the delicious meals I made to stretch and save money. What are some of the ways you stretch meat for your meals?

  2. Your sandwiches look delicious! I do stir-fry a lot, which can be done with a small amount of meat.

It’s amazing how a small amount of meat can make such a delicious and filling meal Janet. I love stir-fry also, can’t wait for our garden to get going so I can have fresh stir-fry squash and peppers! Thanks for visiting!
