How I Got Started At Blogging

How I Got Started At Blogging

Today is day 2 for the Ultimate Blog Challenge.  Every morning I get an email with daily suggestions, sometimes I use them while other times I already have a topic already planned.  But today when I read my email, I knew I would use the suggested topic.

The question was “How or why did you get started at blogging?”  So here’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

cjthinking
It was Christmas afternoon, 2014 and the family was all together.  My oldest grandson who is very “techy” and I were talking about his blog and I mentioned that I had been thinking of starting one but wasn’t sure how to go about it.  He went to get it laptop and pulled up WordPress.  I do many product reviews and that was the main reason I wanted a blog. CJ scrolled thorough the site, asking me if I wanted this or that. I had not a clue!  After he found the perfect format, next I needed a name.  Words started flowing around until the right one hit us both.  “THE MARTHA REVIEW” was perfect for the header picture, he found crumpled up dollar bills. How perfect was that!  So now I’m set with the free version of WordPress. I was a happy camper and now had a place to keep all my product reviews in one place.

As I started writing, I noticed that some of my blogs weren’t just about reviews so CJ showed me how do add different categories. The cool thing is, when he made any changes, he made sure to show me what he was doing and how to do it.  No me being in my 60’s, wasn’t sure I could retain all this knowledge, but I was determined.

Another month passed and grandson saw how my site was growing so he suggested to get my own domain name since I wanted to do give-a-ways and post affiliate links plus it makes a blog look more professional with your own domain name and there are no pop up ads.

So I graduated to www.TheMarthaReview.com where I shared his server space.  But since it wasn’t just product reviews, we also updated my header picture with a picture of the ocean. I like that because my motto has always been, “If you want to explore deeper oceans, you first have to leave sight of the shore”.  This is so true about many things in life and it is so meaningful. Now it was April 2016 and I was ready for another move.  My grandson helped with the move to Host Gator where I now had my own server.

Migration

In less than two years I went from no blog to a blog with my own domain and shared server to one with my own server. I’m so happy that I started blogging, or should I say my grandson set up and started me blogging.

I have learned so much already but keep learning more with my “mini” continuing education classes my grandson gives me over Skype!  The latest he taught me was how to center my photos using the text tab using a link instead of the visual tab and just adding the photo. It’s interesting to see that a 67 year old gramma can still learn and retain what I’ve learned.

My suggestion to anyone that is interested in starting a blog, JUST DO IT!!

I started my blog on Christmas Day 2014 mainly to review products I received. Since then it has evolved into many other categories of lifestyles, family, money saving ideas, low cost, delicious and healthy meals plus other surprise posts. My granddaughter has her own category, Alex's Articles and the latest addition to my blog is my great granddaughter now has her category, Lia's Likings The Baby Blogger! Lia started blogger at 8 months old and she now has a Friday Story Time blog you won't want to miss! I welcome you to join the conversation, ask a question, give a suggestion or leave a comment on any blog post. I hope you enjoy Lia's Likings, she has some great posts that will make you smile!

Saw your post on the October Challenge on Facebook. I did just what you said – I wanted to start a blog for six years, but only recently gathered up the courage to do so.
I consider myself the “New Kid on the Blog”

Really nice story about how you grew your blog. You started much later than I did but I still don’t know how to do my own domain name and own server. It’s all good, though.
