DON’T CLICK THAT LINK!

DON’T CLICK THAT LINK!

I’m sure you have all received an email from “your bank” or “your credit card” being compromised and the sender will help you correct the problem.   But what ever you do, DON’T CLICK THAT LINK!   No matter how official the email looks, I never click any links or open anything from the email.

I receive emails like this almost daily (or the ones that say they want to send me millions if I just send them my bank account number) and most go directly into my spam but a few sneak through.  There are things you should do if you get something from your bank or credit card company saying your account has been compromised.

First, call or email the company and let them know what you received.  If you email, they usually reply DON’T CLICK THAT LINK but forward the email to their fraud team. Next, after you forward the email, send it to your spam and delete immediately so there is no chance of you clicking on it accidentally.

As soon as I received this email, I knew immediately it was a fraud because I don’t even have an account with them!  But if you do have an account with a company that you receive and email, check the header and the “FROM” address.  That’s a pretty good give away if it is from something other than the bank.

The next thing you can do is click on the “DETAILS” under the address and it will open a new window and this is where you can get information that helps you track where the email came from.

So many people get emails like this everyday and know it’s fraud but there are also others that may not be computer savvy and when they see a link, they click it.  Help get the word out to your friends, keep reminding them and tell them DON’T CLICK THAT LINK!!

Scammers and hackers need to get a legitimate life and stop causing the pain when someone gets caught into one of the traps that could wipe their accounts and life savings clean.

So true..Martha …I don’t click even from someone I know if the first line doesn’t look right. I just contact them by another media and ask the question and a few times they have been hacked so best to be aware at all times. A sad sign of the times though 🙂

Same with me Carol. So much hacking of emails and accounts, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If I can an email from a friend with attachment, I always message or email them back from a new email, asking it it’s really from them. Looks like we are on the same security page! LOL

yes, i check the sender’s email id like you mentioned and definitely no clicking any links.. you have provided great info here :)thanks..and thanks for your comments on my blog as well.. one of the things about participating in UBC is definitely discovering blogs that i know i will visit often in the future

Thanks LadyInRead, I like to remind, remind, and remind people because opening something wrong can wipe out everything. It scary how much fraud and scamming is going on. I enjoy reading your blog and the UBC is a great way to connect with new bloggers! Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Great reminder! Some of the scammers are getting better and better. My favorites are the banks that write to me and I don’t even have an account there! Thanks for the post.

If I had accounts at every “bank” I get a letter from, I would be rich! LOL Like you mention, they are getting better and better, the emails looks so real and convincing. If my blog helps only a few, it will be well worth it. Thanks for stopping by Anne.

man every time you turn around it seems like they have found a new way to steal people’s money.

    • Martha says:

Isn’t that the truth Brenda! I worry about the “older” generation that just get hooked on the internet to keep in touch for grandchildren. They may not have a clue on some of the ways the scammers work and I feel the more we can get out to everyone, hopefully it will just save someones savings. Thanks for visiting.

  7. One thing I’ll say for Yahoo…that spam filter catches almost all of this type of thing.

I don’t get too many but every now and then one will sneak through Priscilla. The hackers and scammers are so high tech now, the emails look so genuine. Thanks for stopping by!
