How to Plan Meals and Eat Healthy

The first thing I do when I plan meals is shop for foods that are healthy but I also look for products on sale.  Sometimes it’s hard to find good prices on meats but our store has buy one, get one free at times and when that’s the case, I stock up.

Last week I got a great deal on London broil steak, weekly special price of $6.99 with each package a little over a pound but it was buy one, get one free. I paid $7.86 with the BOGO and the two packages were enough for two meals for two people. That was for TWO packages and I only need one to make a meal for two so each meat package came to less than $4.00!  They also had a three pound bag of frozen broccoli spears on sale for $4.99.  Since I’m reading labels, I checked this bag and all it has is BROCCOLI, no preservatives or artificial ingredients.

Okay not it’s time to prepare my meal for hubby and me.  I started slicing up fresh peppers and onions plus cutting the steak in thin slices. I find that when I cut a steak in pieces, it seems like I have more meat than leaving it in one piece. I added Olive Oil to a frying pan and slightly browned the vegetables before I added the meat.  I cooked it on high until browned on both sides then cut the heat down to medium until the steak was done cooking.

I steamed the broccoli and that was it, smothering the steak with the peppers and onions.  A meal like this doesn’t even need potatoes or any other side dish.  A delicious, healthy and simple meal for two that cost about $6.00, that’s $3.00 a meal and was it filling!

Since I’m still staying away from sweet tea, I opted for water and I added a few frozen raspberries for flavor.  The water magically changes color from the raspberries and has a delicious hint of flavor. So there you have it, my Blog Headline on how to plan meals and eat healthy!

That seems delicious! I also use to cut my meat before cooking: it’s easier and faster to cook and so to serve. With a young child that let me eat hot 😉

Oh yes, I forgot to mention how much faster meat cooks by cutting it up! I love dinners like this, inexpensive, quick to prepare and delicious to eat! Thanks for visiting my kitchen Stephie.

That is my kind of meal, simple and healthy.

Great post, Martha! My taste buds are salivating for your food. If I may ask, what spices or seasoning did you add? Also, is it healthy to heat olive oil at high heat?

    Thank you very much!

I read about cooking on high heat and got different answers. Olive oil cooks hotter than cooking oil so you have to watch it to make close. I have it on high just enough to brown the meat then turn it down to medium. As for spices and seasoning, I don’t add any! I never use salt and if I do use seasoning, it’s just a small amount of a seasoning blend. Now if you asked that question to my granddaughter, she would give you a long list of all kinds of spices! LOL Hubby and I aren’t into spicy foods but I find when I cook the meat with vegetables, that adds flavor. Thanks for stopping by for dinner!!
