A Visit from My Grandmother

A few days ago the suggested topic for the Ultimate Blog Challenge was to write about someone you admire. Since I already had my own topic I didn’t use this one. But last year I wrote about my grandmother being someone I admire. http://themarthareview.com/my-grandmother/ Yesterday I had a visit from my grandmother in the way of a red cardinal.

Yesterday would have been my grandmother’s birthday. She was born on April 4, 1888. Her and my grandfather lived with my family since I was about 5 years old. Nanny was a big part of my life since my mom and dad both worked. I remember helping Nanny bake, can and freeze our garden vegetables and always being there for me. One of her delicious cakes she always made was a chocolate mayonnaise cake. This is Nanny recipe and it’s oh so good! I still use the same baking pan and cake platter that Nanny used. http://themarthareview.com/chocolate-mayonnaise-cake/

I’m now seeing me in my grandmother when I do projects with Lia. The one thing I will always remember is when Nanny gave me the beater to lick after the cake was mixed! I loved licking the batter but it’s time to turn that part over to Lia now! If it wasn’t for my grandmother I may not have learned all I did so I could pass it down to my granddaughter and now my great granddaughter.

As I mentioned yesterday was my grandmother’s birthday and a beautiful red cardinal visited mom’s memory garden. There are a few meanings of when you see a red cardinal, one is cardinal is a representative of a loved one who has passed. When you see one, it means they are visiting you.

When I saw the cardinal, I knew it was Nanny visiting me. After I snapped a few pictures I went out and gave the cardinal a message to take back to my grandmother and mother. I told my grandmother Happy Birthday and I love her and my mom very much.

All the things she taught me have been put to excellent use and every time I’m doing a baking project with Lia I have memories of me doing the same with Nanny when I was way younger.

Happy Heavenly Birthday Nanny, I love and miss you, all the memories of the past forever in my heart will last.

My grandmother, like my mom, loved flowers Jeanine. I’m sure she stopped by to smell the roses! Memories are the best and I love making them with Lia.

All I am going to say is that I love this!

And, I agree about the cardinals!

Thanks Paul, some people don’t believe, but that’s okay. I love when cardinals and butterflies visit with messages from my loved ones.

beautiful…I love seeing Cardinals when they are in the yard. The same goes for butterflies.

A beautiful tribute in your yard for the memory of your mother. It’s amazing how the small things in life that we are blessed with on a daily basis mean so much to us – such as the Cardinals visiting your yard.

Loved reading your piece. I was also recounting stories about my grandmother yesterday (who I also call Nanny, but in French). 🙂 And we spoke about when do we feel most connected to our family members who are no longer physically with us. Thanks for sharing your stories.

How sweet that you were recounting stories about your grandmother, also Nanny! Our loved ones may no longer be her physically but they will live in our hearts forever Mariette.

I can see that you are following in your grandmother’s footsteps with your granddaughter. It is a very beautiful connection.

I didn’t know that seeing a red cardinal meant someone was visiting you. Thank you for sharing that.

I’ve never had chocolate mayonnaise cake but I pulled your recipe up and I think we might make it later because my son said he wanted a cake today.
