A Special Memory of Mom
Today is Spiritual Sunday but it’s also my mom’s birthday. She is celebrating her 105th birthday in heaven and I made a special memory of mom. I thank God for the 79 years mom had on this earth, she was a special and loving mom for sure.
I remember years and years ago my mom always dreamed of owning a fur coat but it was just a dream as she looked through the catalogs until one day my dad surprised her with a beautiful Persian Lamb fur coat. The first time she wore it to church she said she felt like a queen and she looked like one also. The body of the coat was gray Persian Lamb with a solid light gray fur collar. The lining was a satin gray with small flowers scattered about and her initials sewn in the hem of the lining.

Back maybe 8 years ago my sister gave me mom’s coat and asked if I could make pillows from the coat for my two sisters and me. The coat was so disintegrated I was unable to sew on it as the fur hide backing was falling apart with every stitch.

So I came up with another plan to make three shadow boxes using the coat fur to cut out a full heart shape, the collar fur a half heart and the back of the frame would be covered with the coat lining. I had to left this dry overnight so last Monday morning I finished my project.

I was so pleased how they all came out and the big surprise was I didn’t tell either of my sisters what is in the packages I sent to them. I wanted the special memory of mom for my sisters to be delivered in time for our mom’s heavenly birthday, she will be 105 years old today.
Since I was the one to come up with this idea, I was the one who got to have the piece of lining with mom’s initials on it plus I added the label of the furrier store from Schenectady New York who made the coat. But the other reason would be my older sister would wonder why Nancy got the initials and my younger sister would have a fit if Anne got the initials. So to keep the peace, the middle sister got them. LOL
This is a note I included in each of the packages:

I mailed them Priority mail on Tuesday, one went to New York, the other went to Maine. They were due to be delivered Friday but that didn’t happen. The one for New York got up to Massachusetts then when back down to Alabama! The one for Maine is still floating around Columbia South Carolina.
A Slight Change

After I had mine all put in the frame and hanging on the wall, I came up with another idea. I added mom’s pearl necklace around the heart. I love making handmade items for gifts, I call them gifts from the heart and with these special memories I made, I hope my sisters love them as much as I do. Happy Heavenly Birthday mom, I love you!
For Spiritual Sunday, I want to share the Quote of the Week from our bulletin. This is from St. Thomas Aquinas who’s Feast day is on January 28th. May you all have a blessed Sunday,
To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith no explanation is possible.

What a wonderful project, Martha, and I love the addition of the pearl necklace 💖
Happy heavenly birthday to your Mom!
Thanks Tamara and that’s why I save so much stuff! LOL I never know when it will have a special place in my creations.
It is clear that your mom was and continues to be so special to the 3 of you. Happy heavenly 105th birthday to her!
My mom was so special to so many people Kimberly. This memory heart brings so much joy to me knowing how much she loved her coat.
What a beautiful tribute to your mom. Happy Heavenly Birthday to her.
Thanks Kim, this brings back great memories of my mom.
What a wonderful creative idea, Martha! Happy birthday to your mother in heaven. I still have alot of my mother’s clothes. I’m going to look through them to see if I could use some to make a logcabin quilt for my sister. Thanks for planting that idea in my head.
Thanks Lily and what a beautiful gift that would be for your sister!
Martha, your memory boxes are a lovely tribute to your Mother’s birthday. Sweet, inspirational, and very special. The pearls only added to it! I have to believe your Sisters will love theirs. I know I would!
I also love the quote from St. Thomas Aquinas. I can’t think of a better way to say it! Cindy Rae
Thanks Cindy, I’ve always loke to make homemade gifts and I’m sure mom would love her “gift from the heart” birthday present. But sisters loved them!
Happy heavenly birthday to your mama!
The hearts from her coat is a lovely way to honor her, and share the memories with your sisters!
