A Room of Many Changes

Recently I’ve shared some of my redecorating and decluttering projects. The latest being the garage and the three themes of the guest room. I realized my front room as had so many changes, it reminds me of the song by Dolly Parton, the Coat of Many Colors but my song would be A Room of Many Changes. LOL Throughout our 26 years in this house we used it for different reasons and had a redecorated the room many times to fit the theme.

It started out as our home office when we had our decorating store front. I was able to get a lot of the paperwork done in the evenings after work.

After we retired in 2018 it became just a room. I got rid of the desk and filing cabinets but kept the computer hutch and turned it into a sitting room.

Then along came Lia and I created an adorable Princess room for her. I was lucky to find a cute little kitchen on Marketplace to complete her room. Lia was so excited!

When Christmas 2021 rolled around Lia decided she wanted a Christmas tree in her room. So of course Papa got right on that. After it was all decorated, she stood at the window looking out for Santa. Lia kept her tree up year round and changed the decorations to go with the different holidays and seasons.

But when Lia and her mommy moved to Indiana last year, I moved the Princess room upstairs and when Lia comes down, she loves to go up and play with her dollhouse. Iris also loves to play there when she visits. I had three days to make this transformation as my daughter and son-in-law were coming to visit end of March.

Since her senior dog has trouble walking she wasn’t sure if she would be able to walk upstairs so I turned the office, then sitting room, then Princess room into a room with a day bed using my grandson’s unused bed. I made it look sorta like a couch complete with pillows I made with leftover drapery fabric I had saved for 30 years! But as you know it takes me a few tries to get the best placement. I like the day bed against the gray wall and that completed the room. Snowball approved it also.

If you notice the top of the computer hutch in the two previous pictures, the first one is only one shelf. Since I had things I wanted to display I found 4 large Mason jars, filled them with washed pea stones and added a mirror upside down as a second shelf. You can see the reflection of the things on the bottom level in the mirror! (I come up with some clever ideas LOL)

One last change and I think I’m done with this room! I found a perfect sofa sleeper at the furniture store just around the corner and I got a great deal on it plus it could be delivered the same day. It also worked out perfect for my neighbor who needed a twin bed and all she and I had to do was walk it across the street! I completed what I think will be the last redecorating of this room. But you never know, the way my brain does things, I might come up with something different but I hope not too soon.

So like Dolly’s Coat of Many Colors, I have a room of many changes.

I love the many iterations of this sweet room!
When my Grands K and Z-man were little, a little kitchen was found at the PlaySchool rummage sale, and a favorite aunt sent kitchen supplies, including little chef hats and aprons!
Some cute decade-ago videos have showed up recently – they were so adorable ‘cooking’ and changing “poopie’ diapers!
Like Lia, they still bake and cook!

Aww I’m sure you have so many memories of those days Nadya! I think the “playing house” and play cooking a baking is what helps a lot of kiddos get interested in cooking.

So many stories told and held in just one room, what a tribute to this special space. I enjoyed seeing all of the variations and uses of this room of many changes!

Your ability to reinvent a room is impressive. I did love the “all year round Christmas room era”!

I’m glad you enjoyed it Tamara. Lia has always been what we might call adventurous and creative. I loved watching her decorating for different holidays while certain neighbors would come in and look a bit put out because we still have a Christmas tree up. I would remind them it’s Lia’s holiday tree.

You’re doing great organizing and decorating these different rooms, Martha. I like the overall ambience. Lia’s princess room is super cool, and I can tell she’s loving it!

    • Martha says:

Thanks Danwil, looking back from when it was first an office, it’s come a long way! But knowing me and my “can’t leave well enough along” I’ll probably make a change again sometime.

Love all the changes the room went through. You’ve done great. My whole house is still a frigging cluttered mess. One day soon.

Lily, if you could have seen my before pictures you would like I was getting ready to be on the Hoarder’s show. LOL But I’m proud of myself for getting what I’ve got done so far. There will always be more and maybe I could take a little trip up your way and we can have a cleaning out party! I’d love to meet you someday, it seems like we have so much in common!

  6. Great blog. I can relate. My room went through many changes. I miss my old room.

Well as the saying goes, we all have to move on Amanda. You have a sweet house and I find it’s hard for me to stick to one thing. I’ll probably be changing something in that room again.
