2nd Covid Vaccine

On January 28th Rich and I both received our 1st Covid vaccine. I was lucky to get both appointments on the same day and ten minutes apart! This is the blog I wrote when We Got Shot. When I tried to make our second appointment that was written on our card they were constantly out of vaccine and kept cancelling. I had to do some digging in to find a location for our 2nd Covid Vaccine.

Every evening there would be notifications online and on the television that vaccines would be available at certain locations and appointments would start at 7AM the following morning. Every morning I jumped on the computer and my phone at the same time trying to find appointments but didn’t have any luck.

This past Tuesday morning Rich found another vaccine location where they were giving vaccines from 9AM to 4PM on Wednesday and this one had a phone number! I immediately called and told them we needed our 2nd dose. They confirmed it was Phizer which is the one we needed. Luck was on our side again, we were able to get appointments ten minutes apart on the same day at 10AM and 10:10AM. But the exciting part was the shots were the follow day!

The not so exciting part was we had to drive 208 miles round trip to receive them. But that was no problem, we had appointments. I worried all night that we would have a text message saying they canceled due to another vaccine shortage but that didn’t happen either!

So Wednesday morning we left home about 6:45AM for a nice country drive to the Marlboro County High School in Bennettsville SC. This picture was taken at 7AM just as the sun was coming up.

We arrived about 8:45AM and was directed to the area to get in line. There were only about fourteen vehicles in front of us and about that many behind us within a few minutes. We could see the tents in the distance with people working to get things ready. While we waited in line, Rich and I did funny faces. You can not get a smile from Rich, he said he tried it once and didn’t like it! LOL

At exactly 9AM the line started moving with the SC National Guard directing again. I assumed the ones like us that were there early would be ushered to a different location to park and wait but they took everyone in order of where they were in line. Next we followed the leader until we got to a huge tent were we drove into. It was a drive through location so we didn’t even have to get out of the vehicle!

Most of the people there were getting their first shot so when we got to the next station, we handed them our driver license and the COVID vaccine card we received previously.

The team of nurses and medical personal were super, very efficient and friendly even though it was super cold they didn’t complain.

They shot me first, this one stung a little be no big deal. Then they went to the other side of the truck and shot Rich. After we were done the showed Rich were to park and wait for 15 minutes to make sure we had no reactions. Over in this location there was a team of doctors, nurses and an ambulance on standby. Our 15 minutes was up and we were on our way home!

The next morning my arm felt bruised just like the first shot but again it wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle. Rich on the other hand had a “yucky” taste and his stomach wasn’t feeling that great. For two days he was more tired than normal, not sure if it was because of his compromised immune system. But from some of the side effects I’ve read about, we fared very well.

Some people have told me they aren’t sure if they want the vaccine, too many “what if’s” may happen they say. But I look at it this way, maybe people will have side effects, yes some may be bad for a few days. But if they get COVID they may not be around to take about it since so many deaths are still happening.

I’m happy Rich and I were both able to get both doses and I do hope they will work the way it’s hoped. We will still wear our masks and keep our distance but hopefully we can breathe a little easier now.

I am so glad you were able to get the shots and Rich as well. As for the drive it looked like a pretty day for a trip. I hope Rich is better now and I am glad you didn’t feel bad as well. Have a good day.

We lucked out on the weather Glenda, it has been raining for about a week and the day we went for our shots it finally took a break! Rich is doing better, thanks, we’re just happy we were able to get them!

  2. WooHoo for you! You’ve done your part. Now, if we can just get 272 million others!

From some of the comments we’re getting, I think many will not get the vaccine Roy. They are worried about the side effects but I told them I’d gamble with those instead of possibly getting COVID and not making it. To me it’s a no brainer.

I don’t like to be poked with a needle, so I guess I have to take a pass on this vaccine.

    • Martha says:

I’m not big on needles either Jojo but neither shot was painful. Just think if someone doesn’t get the vaccine and ends up with COVID how many needles they will be stuck with during the course of the virus and also the possibility of not being around to talk about it.

  4. Awesome Martha! Glad you guys were able to finally get them even if it was a fight and had to drive for miles. You are now covered and can breathe better. Can’t wait until my husband and I can get them. He should hopefully be early next month (transit worker), but not sure about mine. We will see how it goes here in CO. Best of luck to you both. 🙂

    • Martha says:

Thanks Samantha, I’m so relieved that’s behind us and yes we can breathe better and it was a nice drive. Hope you both are able to get both shots without any problems Samantha!

It’s interesting to read of your experience with the whole process. Thank you.

    • Martha says:

Thanks Suzanne, we’d rather go through a few obstacles to get the shots than chance getting the virus and not knowing what the outcome of that may be.

  6. Martha, I’m so happy for you and Rich! My husband and I have both received the full dose of the COVID vaccine. Today is 2 weeks after the second dose for me, so I am considered fully immunized now, not that I’m changing any of my behavior. I will continue to mask and social distance.

I got the Moderna and my husband got the Pfizer vaccine. I had a strong reaction to the second dose whereas my husband had minimal. Even though I felt crappy for about a day and a half after my second dose, it was nothing compared to getting COVID.

I hope and pray more people will be vaccinated and protect not only themselves but others. We have a chance as a society to get ahead of this pandemic only when everyone does their part. Thank you for doing yours! ❤️

That was my thought also Melissa, we’ll take a few yucky days compared to the horror stories we’ve read about getting COVID. My daughter lost her father-in-law and a few aunts and uncles. They went to a NY party with 11 people they had been around previously and with a few weeks 16 people including the 11 had COVID. I think 4 of them died, so sad. Praying that more people will opt to get shot but we too will still be donning our masks!

  7. vidya says:

so glad to hear you got your second dose as well..

  8. I’m glad you were able to get both shots! I am one of the cautious ones, because, having chronic fatigue syndrome, I have a compromised immune system. But I totally get your point about being around to complain about side effects.

    • Martha says:

Rich has a compromised immune system also Jeanine, I think that’s why he was tired and yucky for a few days. But rather have that than be dead! Okay that might be harsh but we know many who have not recovered from COVID.

  9. Martha, wow! What an adventure! And so worth it for your health and peace of mind. I’m thinking: go with a full tank of gas, and hit the restroom right before leaving? My husband has had both shots, thanks to the VA, and I have an appointment for #1 on Sunday. It does seem the World is moving toward beating this stupid virus and ending the Pandemic with herd immunity. Yay!

    • Martha says:

LOL Definitely hit the restroom right before leaving Kebba! When we got a few miles from the school we stopped a gas station because I wasn’t sure how long of a wait we may have. When my bladder calls, there’s no waiting! LOL So glad your hubby is set and you will be soon! I’m thinking positive that we are beating it, one shot at a time.

I’m glad that you and your husband are both doing well.
