World Penguin Day
April 25th
I just found out today is World Penguin Day and since two of my granddaughters and I love Penguins, I decided this would be a great blog topic for Day 25 in the Ultimate Blog Challenge.
The annual northward migration of penguins is usually around April 25th and they live mostly in the southern hemisphere of Antarctica , South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, the Falkland Islands, and the Galápagos Islands. Penguins don’t fly but they can swim up to 22 miles an hour and dive up to 1,850 feet! I would say they adapt to water and land very well.
The Emperor Penguin is the largest species that is alive today and the average adults are about 3 feet 7 inches tall and weigh 75 pounds or more. The Little Blue Penguin is the smallest penguin and is about 16 inches tall and weighs just over 2 pounds.
I love how penguins are “dressed” in little tuxedos but there is a reason for that. Their elegant black and white coat protects them from predators. When a penguin is swimming, the black feathers on their back blend in with the dark sea bottom and the white belly protects from predators in the water underneath them. I’ve seen many movies with penguins and it’s fun to watch them glide across the water or slide across the frozen land. Penguins are so much fun to watch.
When my granddaughter was in the hospital a few years ago in November, we took her a 30″ tall Penguin mascot for the end of her hospital bed to watch over her.
When she returned home, she received many get well gifts, mostly penguin items! A Santa Penguin pillow arrived, no name so we assume it came from Santa Claus!
This is a penguin cell phone holder that my granddaughter gave me for Christmas, I love the big round eyes! This little blue penguin was stuffed down the side of a chair that we were removing from a condo while redecorating. We saved the penguin and he now rides in style on the dash of our truck!
I was reading another blogger’s blog about sock animals and I found the most adorable sock penguin pattern. Since I had some wild-looking socks, I made her a little sock penguin to go with her collection. Here is a link to my blog with information on the sock animals, they are fun and easy to make.

Two years ago when I participating in the A to Z and Ultimate Blog Challenge at the same time, for letter “P” of course I chose Penguins to write about!

If you open my blog to the homepage, you will even find a little penguin sitting on the edge of the ocean picture. When I see them in movies, photos or even stuffed animals, they make me smile because they are so darn cute! So happy National Penguin Day to all the penguin lovers out there!

Oh my gosh, they are all so adorable!! I love the mama one. And the cell phone holder. And I can’t believe how fast they can swim! When I saw your title, I went to remind my son of Happy Feet. He loved it, and for a while after it came out, every once in a while, one of us would say, “I’ve got happy feet!” and would dance. 🙂
Oh I love Happy Feet and March of the Penguins! Something about watch movies with Penguins makes me smile! That’s so sweet that you and your son would dance with your happy feet Jeanine! Thanks for dancing through my blog!
Sometimes timing is a funny thing. I had just opened your post to read it and my niece (staying with us tonight) told me she was a penguin in a school activity today. (She wanted to be a sloth – definitely preferred – or a unicorn, but she *had* to be a penguin.)
That is so sweet that your niece was a penguin on the same day I wrote my penguin blog! Maybe she can be a sloth next time! Thanks for stopping by Jen!
