Reusable Storage Containers

This is day two of my Organizing Tips and More and I have so many reusable storage containers! The good thing about these are they are reasonable and although they are reusable there comes a time when they have reach the end of their life for food storage.

I pulled every container out of the cupboard, Rubbermaid, Tupperware, Glad Storage and even take out containers from restaurants. Of course they were like missing socks, I had the bottoms but no tops or tops that didn’t fit a bottom. So many were stained with spaghetti sauce and although they were still functionable it was time for them to go. This is just a part of what I pulled out! I did keep a few good ones with tight fitting lids that are great for Lia’s beads or nuts and bolts so some still have a good home. The others went in to recycling bin.

A few weeks ago Walmart had a 40 piece Rubbermaid Take Along container set for $24.99. We were heading to Sam’s Club so I checked them out and they had the exact same set for $20.99. I put them in our cart and as I rounded the corner I saw another set with 64 containers including a huge storage container that the smaller ones all fit in. Look at all the different sizes that are included in this set! This set was $21.99 but after a $4.00 off coupon, it only cost $17.99. So of course that’s the one I got!

As I was getting ready to stack them in the cupboard I remembered how the lids usually get scattered all around and if the containers aren’t stacked neatly they fall over. So I decided to us the large storage bin they came in to store them all in! There is also one large rectangle one that is perfect for cookie storage.

Just like the storage containers I wrote about yesterday in our pantry, this one can slide out like a drawer also. Now I think I have found the solution to keep all my food storage containers neatly stored and easily accessible in my cupboard.

Do you come up with frugal ways to store items in you pantry or cupboards? Even our garage is filled with plastic storage containers! I’m slowing getting rid of things that I thought I needed to save and organizing the things I’m using. I’ve had enough clutter!

Great Inspiration. I need to do the same and reorganize.

Nice blog post and I can relate to this because at home we, especially my wife, save a lot of plastic containers that we can still reuse or repurpose for good use.

Thanks Danwil! I have a hard time tossing things that I may be able to use at some other time. But there comes a time when some things have to go!

  3. Thanks for another valuable storage lesson. I like how the containers and their lids all fit into the larger bin. I like that idea. Thank you.

Thanks Florence, another great thing about these storage containers, they are very reasonable so I can toss them and get new ones but still have the storage bin for them.

I can totally relate to the never-ending search for matching lids and the horror of stained containers. I must admit, I too have a love-hate relationship with my reusable storage containers. They’re great for keeping things organized, but it seems like they’re always multiplying and taking over my cupboards.

I love the idea of using the large storage bin they came in to store them all in, it’s a great solution to keep everything neatly stored and easily accessible. I might have to try that myself.

I also appreciate your frugal approach to organizing. I too, have been on a decluttering journey, and it’s amazing how much stuff we accumulate over time. I’m sure we all have a “Garage of Plastic Containers” in our homes, but slowly getting rid of things that we don’t need and organizing the things we actually use is definitely worth it.

Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks, I’m looking forward to reading more of your organizing journey!

I can sort the lids and containers, have equal amounts and a few days later I’m missing or have too many lids. LOL I like the large storage bin the containers came in and they are so reasonable to buy, when they get stained or mis matched, I’ll just get new ones but sill have my large bin to store them in. Does the decluttering journey every end Paul? I’m at it again, going room by room to downsize. That will be another blog story for the next UBC!

It’s nice to replace things and have something new, even though it is only food containers! I recently did this very activity and purchased new storage containers. However, I like how this set comes in a bin to slide in the cabinet more easily. Maybe time to check it out at Sam’s!

    • Martha says:

Yes it is Angie and I was excited over the inexpensive price. At that price, I can toss them when they stained or cracked. I do love the slide out bin!

I have the same set and even purchased one for my mother in law because were always sending food back and forth and this way we each have a set and if one of us needs a storage container we don’t have we just call each other. keeping us in contact bringing us closer together.

    • Martha says:

That’s cool that you and your mom-in-law have the same set! I like the large bin they came in for keeping them all together. Thanks for visiting Glenda!

  8. Martha, oh yes! Great chase-down of the least-cost option! And the pieces are clear, so you can quickly see what’s in them. Huge energy saver. I once knew a couple who got a large (60-piece?) set of clear Rubbermaid storage containers. They had a very deep drawer in their kitchen, and they stored those containers with the lids on. The legend goes that no lid was ever lost!

    • Martha says:

I love the storage container my set came in and I’m able to slide it like a drawer Kebba. I’m not big on storing containers with the lids on, I would think they make hold odors in.

Interesting. How many extra/unwanted plastic containers do we get from food delivery and supermarkets? I have a love and hate relationship with them. Prefer to keep using the glass ones, but do use some of the plastics.

    • Martha says:

OMG yes they seem to accumulate overnight Dianna! I too have a full set of glass containers with lids and I usually use them for leftover meals and cooking. My plastic ones are used more for freezing leftovers and meal prep.

  10. I have gone through the plastic contains many times at my grandparents house and like you I had to throw some of them away.
