Organizing Kitchen Drawers

Organizing Kitchen Drawers

Do you kitchen drawers look like this?

Do you have a problem trying to keep your silverware and utensils neat in the kitchen drawers?    The store bought drawer organizers never seem to fit correctly and I wind up wasting space when I use them.   I’m not sure if you would call me frugal, cheap or creative but I don’t like to spend money.  I would rather come up with ideas to correct the problem and also save money.   Most of the organizers purchased from stores hold your silverware vertical but what until you see what I came up with. This is my invention to organize the drawers without having any wasted space.

For my invention I used a piece of foam board that was left over from another project and after I measured the width of the drawer, I cut the pieces the height of the drawer and a tiny bit longer. I cut four pieces and positioned them in the drawer so I had five separate compartments for the silverware.   By cutting them slightly longer, they fit snug and stay in place. If you want more stability, you can add a small angle bracket on the drawer side and the other side on the foam board.   By having the spaces horizontal, there is no wasted space at all.  You can also use a thin plywood but it won’t have the give for staying in place like foam board.

The next drawer started out as knives and baking utensils but it soon became a drawer of just clutter.   For this drawer I used the same plastic organizer but I made it neat!  I removed all the plastic spoons and forks from fast food places and made a spot in the front of the organizer for my egg slicer, peeler and jar opener.

Since I have cleaned out the junk in both drawers and organized everything, it’s easy to find thing plus it’s easier to keep things neat when you have a neat place to start with.

While this isn’t a coupon or freebie deal, it is a helpful way to save money.

Great idea. Kitchen drawers don’t seem to come in standard sizes in the UK and getting an organiser to fit is very difficult. Your invention solves that problem

I do not have a silverware drawer. I place all mine in two different plastic containers on the metal shelves in my kitchen. I found them awhile ago at Wal-mart.

That sounds like a good idea! I am so limited on my shelf space though, I need to utilize every inch of space in the drawers and shelves. My next venture has to by organizing shelves! Thanks for visiting.

We’ve always used organizers like this. I love opening the draw and being able to see what’s there instead of the one photo you showed where everything is everywhere.

Great tips. My drawers are a mess. I think it is because the kids do not put things away in the correct spots. Any solutions for that??

Hi Beth, Not sure how old your kids are, but maybe you could get some of the stick-on chalkboard labels to mark what goes where? I’ll put my thinking cap on for this one. Thanks for visiting!

  5. Brilliant! None of the store made models fit my drawers right, very frustrating. I’m going to do this thanks!
