Today is National Cashew Day and it’s perfect to share my OH NUTS blog. I wrote it a year after I started my healthy eating plan in July 2018 and it lists some healthy benefits of eating nuts.

Since today is National Cashew Day I thought it would be the perfect time to share my trail mix recipe with you. Back in January 2019 when I was looking for healthy snacks to go with my healthy eating plan I started making my own trail mix. I purchased unsalted nuts, dried fruit and unsweetened coconut to come up with a delicious trail mix recipe. It not only tasted delicious it had a variety of nuts, not just mostly peanuts like the store bought bags.

Beneficial Nutrients

“Nuts are packed with beneficial nutrients, like magnesium and folate, and they’re also high in dietary fiber. Although they’re high in calories and fat, nuts can be a welcome addition to your health-conscious diet. They’re naturally low in saturated fat — unhealthy fat that’s linked to heart disease and high in unsaturated fat, which is good for your cardiovascular health. Some nuts also offer a significant amount of protein, which supports strong muscle tissue and helps with tissue growth and repair.” This quote is taken from Livestrong website. You may be interested in reading about what nuts are high in protein and low in saturated fat according to them. https://www.livestrong.com/article/378871-what-nuts-are-high-in-protein-and-low-in-saturated-fat/

The other day I made a batch of my trail mix and I have a few tablespoons of it for a snack. If I didn’t limit myself I would eat the entire batch in one sitting! So grab some cashews, almonds, peanuts, some dried fruit and coconut if you like that and whip up some delicious trail mix to celebrate National Cashew Day!
