Muffin Cereal

Do you throw away muffins when they get stale? I came up with a way to turn hard, stale muffins into muffin cereal! Last week I wrote about the great deals we got when I recieved a free year’s Costco membership from Uber. They have gigantic muffins for $7.99 a dozen, sold in half dozen packages!

Look at the size of these muffins, they are so huge! When I buy in quantity I like freeze them in individual freezer bags so we can have “fresh” muffins just by warming them up. But for some reason I didn’t bother to freeze them this time, I guess I thought we would devour them all at once. For large muffins it’s a good idea to cut them in half before freezing them.

I came up with the idea to crumble half a muffin in a bowl and had milk. My invention was a success and my muffin cereal was so tasty plus the milk softened the stale muffin.

Of course I had to come up with other options besides just adding milk. The next time I used not just but added a splash of International Delight white chooclate/raspberry coffee creamer. Oh my, did that hit the spot!

I mentioned that the muffins come 6 in a package and you can mix and match flavors. So I came home with a package of double chocolate and a package of cinnamon coffee cake muffins! When these were fresh, I cut one in slices, warmed it up and added butter to it. Another time I added homemade caramel spread on it and oh my was that delicious!

I made my muffin cereal the same as the chocolate just adding milk. But then I came up with yet another option for the coffee cake muffins! This time I added the cut muffins to my bowl then added milk. Are you ready for this? I microwaved it for about 10 seconds then sprinkled cinnamon on the warm muffin! It was like eating bread pudding or hot cereal. Another option came to mind as I was eating this, I could add apple slices before warming it up! I’ll have to try that one next.

My muffin cereal invention worked for making and it wasn’t only delicious but it was a great way to turn stale muffins into a yummy breakfast. Of course this isn’t exactly what I would call a healthy breakfast but we all have to indulge once in a while. That’s what makes it a good idea to freeze the muffins, out of sight out of mind. You can even freeze them once they get stale but cutting them in pieces before putting in freezer bag. What have you done to make stale muffins tasty again?

Side note… When I was writing my blog because I type so fast, an “e” would appear at the end of “muffin” so I wonder if I shoud make the name more interesting and call this muffine cereal? What do you think does this sound like something that would catch your eye if you saw it on a menu?

  1. I found that you can cover a muffin with a moist paper towel. Place it in the microwave for 15 seconds.
But, your cereal idea is intriguing- even if laden with carbohydrates.

Roy touched on what I was going to post. Stale no more! Putting them in milk is a good idea too!

I love your cereal idea, Martha. I buy the little muffins all the time. They don’t go stale too often but I am going to have to try this next time they do.

    That looks so good.
