Legend of the Sand Dollar

Have you heard about the Legend of the Sand Dollar? When we go to the beach I love to search for all kinds of shells but my favorite is looking for Sand Dollars. It’s easy to pieces but rare to find one that is whole.

If you examine the Sand Dollar it tells a story of the birth and death of Jesus according to the legend.

On the front of the Sand Dollar is an Easter Lily and if you look very close in the center, there is a star that appeared to lead the Wiseman.

The other side has the Christmas poinsettia etched on it to remind us of Jesus’ birthday.

There are four nail holes that go through the Sand Dollar and a fifth one that was made by a Roman’s Spear.

Now here is what you don’t see until you break the center open. Careful crack the shell open and there are five white doves waiting to spread Good Will and Peace.

It’s been said throughout the years that the Sand Dollar is a simple little symbol that Christ left for us to help spread his Gospel through all eternity.

Whether you believe or not, the Sand Dollar is a beautiful shell and it’s rare to find a whole one on the beach.

Thanks Brenda, we don’t get to walk the beach often, even though it’s basically right in our front yard! Need to plan more early morning trips to see the sunrise and find more beautiful shells.

There’s a poem that someone wrote many years ago and I remember my mom telling me about it and making ornaments for the different shells when they first moved to Myrtle Beach in the early 70’s.

  2. They are beautiful to see and find. And how neat to hear about all those connections to Christ. I don’t think I had heard that legend before.

I am telling the children’s story at church this coming Sabbath. This will help me make it really special. We found three whole sand dollars on the beach in Costa Rica a couple days after Christmas.

Yes it was a blessing. Several people commented afterwards, and the children participated and seemed engaged. Thank you for your blog!
