Coconut Snack Mix

I saw a small bag of coconut snack mix the other day with coconut, cranberries, cashews, almonds and chia seeds for $4.49 for a four ounce bag. There was also an eight ounce bag of coconut chips for $3.99. Well that get me doing some figuring. Since I already had the other ingredients at home (except the chia seeds) I could make my own coconut snack mix for a lot less than $4.49 for the small bag.

I added 1/4 cup of each – the coconut chips, slivered almonds, unsalted cashews and dried cranberries to my snack mix. Such a quick and easy snack to mix up! If you aren’t a fan of cranberries, you could substitute raisins instead. I use all these ingredients in baking so I didn’t have to go out and purchase any of them except the coconut chips. I love adding coconut to so many of my recipes and now that I’ve found the chips, they are great in cookies, smoothies and anything else you add coconut to.

My Coconut Snack Mix was very good and none of the ingredients have cholestrerol and only the coconut chips have 10 mg of sodium, the others have none. There is also very little sugar except in the dried cranberries so it’s a fairly healthy snack.

So it all started with the bag of coconut chips but when I see coconut I gotta get it! Then I saw a 4 oz. bag of coconut snack mix for $4.49 and thought to myself, I have all the other ingredients on hand and can make my own for less money! Do you see how my brain works when it comes to saving money?

  1. This looks like a great snack and, even better, I have all of the ingredients already in my pantry. It’s so rainy and chilly here today, I am definitely feeling pulled into the kitchen.

What a smart idea, Martha, using baking ingredients to make your own snack. My house is snack free at the moment and I need something in the evening watching TV. I have walnuts, pecans, raisins, cranberries and even chia. I could maybe throw in some chocolate chips. Tomorrow is shopping day and I’ll look out for coconut chips.

  3. I always get a good recipe when I visit you! I now have coconut chips on my grocery list!

This is a healthy mixture and full of proteins and all essentials. I eat a spoonful of roasted seeds like sunflower seeds, watermelon seeds, peanuts, flaxseeds, melon seeds and add a small piece of sugar candy.

Great Idea….I love making my own trail mix and all, Love the idea of adding coconut chips or flakes to it too! Our fig tree produced so many figs this summer that my Mom became a pro at making FIG jam. She even sent some to family in CA! She couldn’t believe how easy it was and how good it was….she even has some left over… Any ideas for soups coming up? I can use some ideas for soups- I’ll veganize them on my end! I don’t know the weather in SC but here on LI it’s soup season!

    • Martha says:

I make all my trail mix too Pam, a lot cheaper and better ingredients than the ones to buy! Sounds like you mom has had a busy summer, I’ll work on soup ideas for you!

Hello Martha, what a lovely idea to make your own coconut treats, not just for the price savings, but you get to select your favorite snacks to add. With those ingredients you listed, I add 1/8 cube of butter, some cocoa powder, vanilla, and chunky peanut butter all mixed up in a bowl, put spoonfuls separated in a plastic container, and freeze it to make no-bake cookies! Yum, now I have to go make some! Thank you for sharing. Sending lots of love. Jaime

Oh Jaime, I have to try your version, it sounds delicious! I’ll show Lia and she may even have time to make some for her bake sale fundraiser coming up Saturday! I love making my own snacks, a little of this and a little of that. Hugs and love back to you!

So, Martha, you have managed to outdo yourself with this. I love all the ingredients and you’re right, they are so expensive to buy but l never thought of mixing my own. I have some of the ingredients. I will purchase the cranberry (hopefully l can find that) and coconut chips which l know they sell for sure. I am salivating and it’s only 9am here. Thanks for this.

I’m getting creative by adding things I never thought of Kemkem but it’s so much fun to make my own and save money too. I’ve been looking for dried blueberries for my next mix.

  8. My grandpa loves Coconut. I will email him your blog. He may want to try this.
