Who Let the Dog Out?
I think there’s a song with a title like this but this isn’t about the song, it’s about our puppy Rusty. Who let the dog out is now a humorous story.
Last week, Lia, her mommy and Rich and I went out, we were gone a few hours. When we come home we go in the house through the garage and Alexandra was the first to go on. As I entered the garage I heard her say, “How did you get out?” Rusty is crated when we go out since he is only 3 months old.
He was waiting for us at the door and as soon as I went inside my heart sank as I expected to find Lia’s stuffed animals, sofa cushions and table legs chewed apart. I was more worried about electrical wires and phone cords not to mention piles of “do-do” all over the house.
Carefully we walk in like getting ready to walk through a minefield. I went through the kitchen, that was fine then went to the TV room where Lia has her toys along with Rusty’s bed when he’s not in his crate. Did you notice Rusty even has his own Minky blanket?
My heart was pounding as I expected the worse but there was no worse! Rusty didn’t chew up anything or even have an accident!
As to who let the dog out, well not to put the blame on anyone but when we go out Lia runs to his crate and usually gives him a treat through the wire openings and always wants to pet him good-bye. For some reason none of us saw her open the crate door and when she shut it, the latch wasn’t hooked.
But all is well, no damage and Rusty was excited to see us. Rusty got an extra treat that day and now we make sure someone older than Lia checks the crate after she gives Rusty his treat.
If any of you have dogs that are crate trained, have they ever got out and if so did the behave or misbehave? All is well but walking into the house after hearing Alexandra say, “How did you get out?” I thought I might need CPR. LOL
Oh I bet your heart hit the ground! So glad that nothing was chewed and you had no messes to clean up! Good puppy!
When we first brought our Max home he was 8 weeks old and “mostly house trained”. The first 2 or 3 times that we went out, we crated him. Then he out grew that crate! We went out again before I bought a bigger crate and I just said to heck with it – let’s see what you do.
He was really good – no chewing, no accidents, no torn apart house. He’s only been crated those 2 or 3 times in his life.
Now that he’s an adult – 8 years old – we tell him it’s “date night” and he goes and gets in his chair looking all sad.
When I walked in I had visions of the house being a disaster area Nancy. Rusty is doing good about letting us know when he has to go out but I never thought he would just sit here waiting for us to get back. Good puppy indeed!
WOW! Rusty is just adorable! We were fortunate with our Zoey when she was a pup – there was just one area by our stairs where she chewed on the wood, but our house remained unscathed during the puppy years! I bet Lia just loves Rusty! A pal her own size. 🙂
We’ve been lucky with all the pups we’ve had throughout the years Angie. Rusty does like to bark though. LOL
Who Let the Dog Out? Who? Who? Who? Who?
Puppies will be puppies until they are trained and learn to know better. Glad things turned out like they did – it could have been a lot worse! Whew!
I expected to find a mess but Rusty was a good pup! He’s learning the basics fairly fast Paul.
Rusty sounds wonderful and is so cute! Love the picture of Lia sleeping with him on her back. Precious.
Last November I adopted brother and sister rescues, supposedly mini schnauzers and dachshund. I am pretty sure Buddy is part poodle, curls abound. I have kept them crated when I leave and go to bed as they want to chew all of the electrical cords they find. They are now a year old and still want to chew so I guess they are crated for the long haul, but they seem very happy to go into the crate at night and for me to cover them as they snuggle in. Of course they have huge donut beds in their crates so I don’t think they are uncomfortable! The little girl’s name is Reckless I think that says it all!
We’ve crate trained must of our dogs except the Great Danes. The door is always open when we’re home and sometimes pups like to just get away and have a little piece and quiet Cindy. Rusty is using a gigantic prego pillow that was a hand me down from Alex and Lia. LOL
You have a good little puppy there in Rusty. I am glad, there was no real harm done. I love the last photo of Lia sleep and Rusty is guiding her.
Rusty has learned is basics Brenda so hopefully they kicked in when he was alone! LOL
oh such an adorable post Martha!! and i was smiling throughout
It’s adorable now but I almost had heart failure has I started to wondering what did Rusty get into. He was a good puppy!!
I’m so glad everything worked out. I enjoyed reading this post.
A bit scary when I heard my granddaughter say the pup was out Amanda. But so thankful he behaved while we were out.
