Walking Sticks
My hubby had an old walking stick that he brought down to South Carolina when we moved from upstate New York back in 1994. I found mine a few years ago and Lia was lucky enough to find one just her size on our last hike! So now we all have walking sticks.
My Walking Stick
This is a walking stick I found when trying to get up a river bank in Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina a few years ago. I wrote a blog about my escapade which is quite humorous now but wasn’t so funny at the time. http://themarthareview.com/saved-by-the-stick/ I love all the etchings on the stick made by bugs!
Lia’s Walking Stick
Last week we all went on an early morning hike. It is so beautiful walking over the long wooden walkways over the marsh, visiting the shell trees, walking along the Intercoastal Waterway and through the wooded area and trails. Lia was watching a beautiful Blue Heron in the marsh and also watching all the waves come to shore after a large boat went passed.
While Lia was hiking over the shells she looked down and saw a walking stick just her size! It even had a twisted handgrip and it was tapered at the bottom.
When we got home from our hike, Lia had to walk around the yard with her new found walking stick. She even checked out mine, I think she has her eyes on it for when she gets bigger!
I love how each of our walking sticks are so unique, all are nature made and have different markings and twists and turns. But I think Lia’s stick is adorable and just her size. Mine is definitely one of a kind and I could cut the one part of the “Y” off but that’s what helped me get back up the slippery river bank as I used it upside down to get leverage. If it wasn’t for the shape of the stick I don’t know how my hike back up the river bank would have ended.
Wonderful!
Thanks for visiting my blog Brandon.
I agree that Lia’s walking stick is adorable and the perfect size for her! What a cute picture of her holding it. But I like them all, and how cool that you guys found them. The early morning hike sounds wonderful if it included that shoreline.
Lia does look cute with her walking stick! Taking an early morning hike to these gardens is wonderful, we have the intercoastal waterway shoreline, the marsh and wooded trails. Can’t get any better than that Jeanine.
I had completely forgotten about this (generally childish) tradition. Thanks for stirring up some great memories! (It seems that the young and the old so indulge- I’m not quite so sure why the young do- but we ancient mariners tend to require them!)
I don’t usually walk with mine unless I’m going down a steep bank but you gotta admit, Lia looks adorable with her miniature walking stick! I know what you mean out the ancient ones require them Roy. LOL
What a find and a great hike! Lia is a lucky girl and so are you Martha. Have a wonderful adventure today with Lia!
Thanks Cindy, we love taking morning hikes and Lia loves her new found walking stick.
yours is certainly my favorite of the lot!!
I love mine Vidya especially with all the markings etched in it from bugs!
Oh my goodness: a toddler walking stick! It doesn’t get much cuter than that, does it? I’m smiling from ear-to-ear!
I was so excited when I saw Lia with it Julie! It’s even light weight so it’s easy to walk with.
I love the walking stocks!
I was I Alaska one summer in the mid 90s, washing about 1000 dishes at a fly-in fishing camp. We found a couple of great walking sticks, and I learned to knot horse hair for a hand hold on my stick!
What a great idea to make a hand hold for the sticks Nadya. Although I probably wouldn’t use horse hair but sounds neat!
Martha, thank you for another sweet post to help us stay grounded. I have never successfully used a walking stick, myself. But I love that you have! May I use that photo of the egret, with credit given?
Lia’s stick is so adorable and just her size! It makes a great conversation piece also! Of course you can use the egret. I have a few others but that one is the closest one.
I love this. The pictures are so great, and I could just eat Lia up. So adorable.
Thanks Elisa, Lia definitely puts on her “cheese” face when she sees the camera!
That’s great! I love the walking sticks! I have been saved by many a walking stick when I was on the verge of wiping out on some trail somewhere. Lia’s delight with her walking stick is a true joy to behold.
I never gave walking sticks a thought until I couldn’t get back up the river bank! Lia loves her mini sized walking stick and we’ll be hiking again soon!
Great blog post. Loved the photos too.
Thanks Amanda, we went to the mountains a few days ago and Lia found another walking stick while we were hiking!
