U is for United States Flag
U is for United States Flag
What better U word for the A to Z Challenge than U is for United States Flag. The flag is also known as Old Glory and has thirteen horizontal red and white stripes with fifty white stars in a blue rectangle in the upper left corner. Betsy Ross stitched the first United States flag in May of 1776. The thirteen stripes on the United States flag represent the original 13 colonies that declared their independence from Britain in 1776 and the stars represent the number of states in the union. The first flag had 13 stars and as more states were added, the number of stars changed. In 1794, the flag had 15 stars and in 1948, there was a total of 48 stars. When Alaska became the 49th state, the flag was changed to 7 rows with 7 stars on each row. The current American flag design with 50 stars was adopted on July 4, 1960 when Hawaii joined the United States.
The flag of the United States, known as Old Glory, consists of thirteen horizontal red and white stripes and fifty white stars in a blue rectangle in the top left corner. We have always flown the United States flag everyday at our home to show our pride of our country.
We also always ride with the United States flag on our bikes, as most bikers do.
Our community has ceremonies every Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day when the United States flag is a big part of both.
At the Memorial day ceremony, the flag is flown at half staff to honor the military heroes that fought and died for our freedom. During the ceremony, the flag is lowered and raised to full staff.
I’m getting near the end of the alphabet for this challenge and it’s so exciting coming up with the words that go with each letter. Have you been participating in the A to Z Challenge? If so be sure to tag me so I can read your blog!
great article glad, you having fun with the challenge.
Thanks Brenda, this is a fun challenge, sometimes a little head scratching to come up with a word, but so far, I’ve managed. Thanks for stopping by.
Neat history and great photos! Plus, every time I see the name Betsy Ross I think of the Maude theme song ~ “Betsy Ross got it all sewed up! And then, there’s Maude…” 🙂
I remember Maude! As I’m going through the alphabet for this challenge, it’s sometimes a challenge to figure out what to write about the letter also. Thanks for stopping by Jeanine.
Hey Martha, that’s some good information on the American flag. Thanks for enlightening me. I never knew that the US had a British heritage.
I’m enjoying the A to Z Challenge and being able to share tip bits of info with others. Thanks for stopping by Keesha.
You’ve got some nice shots of Old Glory. Ever been to Betsy Ross’s home in Philly? It’s worth a visit if ever you’re in the area.
I’ve never been there Ruthanne, but sure sounds like a great place to visit. I’ll have to plan a trip sometime. Thanks for stopping by.
