TIMBER Pine Tree Coming Down
When we moved to our present house back in 1999, there was a farmer in his 90’s with a large garden behind our house. Our granddaughter was only a few years old and he would fill a basket with fresh picked vegetables, come to the fence and yell for “the little girl”. We would hold Alexandra up and he raised up the basket with his hoe to give to “the little girl”. It was exciting hearing him talk about how he dredged out the Intercoastal Waterway during the war and other cool stories of past history. He loved visiting over the fence and he passed many baskets of vegetables our way. The farmer worked his garden right up to the day he passed away at 100 years old.
When he lived in his house and worked his garden, we could see his house and all they way to the main highway. After he passed away his house stood empty, his garden turned to weeds and small trees and brush started growing where his beautiful vegetable garden was. Slowly the small trees grew….and grew…..and grew even more! Our land behind our fence where it butts to his has now become a forest. We didn’t mind that because it is the perfect place for all the birds, rabbits, raccoons and even a fox now and then to live.
But the one huge pine tree towered over all the others and when a hurricane came to town we were always worried when we watched it sway and bend.
Last month a few tornadoes went through our neighborhood the morning that Hurricane Dorian was about to arrive. Thankfully there were no injuries but many homes were damaged and the Conservation/Wetlands area lost over half the trees.
Our pine tree stood tall but it was enough of a scare to know it had to come down. So yesterday the tree crew came in take it down before it could damage anything if it fell on it’s own.
It was interesting watching the crew prepare the ropes around the tree and hook it to the bucket loader. As the tree cutter was looking at the tree, he yelled to one of the other guys saying it was leaning toward our house, not the other way which was planned. It seems there was just enough of a breeze as to make the tree go in the opposite direction. They all grouped together, made a plan and headed the tree in the right direction.
At this point hubby and I were a bit, no we were VERY nervous just hearing him say it was leaning the wrong way. But the tree cutter knew his stuff and within a few minutes we heard, “Timber, pine tree coming down!” They did an awesome job of downing the tree and cutting it in pieces.
The only thing I was worried about was the birds that were always in that big pine tree but there are so many others back there, I think they all found new branches to perch on.
With the pine tree down, we still have our mini forest but now we don’t have to worry about the tree deciding to come down on it’s own. We also have lots more sunshine in the yard!
Love this story of the circle of life! I also love that your granddaughters get to share in the blogging with you! What a great way to continue your legacy!
Thanks Patricia, that’s a good way to describe it, the circle of life! I so enjoy having Alexandra write her blogs and now her daughter following in her footsteps. It’s started as a “funny” but Lia puts so much into checking things out and emotion that I think she will be blogging on!!
I am always fascinated seeing professional tree workers that know what they are doing handling a massive tree like that! We had some work done in the past and it was mesmerizing as they safely removed a massive tree in our backyard.
Thanks for sharing!
OMG, Rich and I were sitting on the edge of our seats Paul, especially when the one cutter told the other the tree was going to fall the wrong way! He definitely know what he was doing and had them re-anchor the ropes and down it went, exactly as planned! It was a huge one for sure!
Pines are nice but scary sometimes. We had a lot come down during the last big storm…not fun.
They sure are scary when they get so tall and we watch them swaying in the wind. We’ve had enough storms, no more Jean!!
Martha, I love your collection of photos around this pine tree! What a wonderful story too. Glad you were able to “let go” of the tree and the memories behind it. Now you can make room for new memories!
Well it was a matter of safety and while the pine tree is gone, we still have the memories that will always be with us. Of course when my granddaughter and grandson saw they picture, they cringed, taking a piece of their childhood away! Thanks for visiting Aletha.
Great photos!
It was amazing watching them cut down this huge tree Amanda. He cut it like going throug butter.
