The Life of Lia’s Butterflies
It’s not Friday Story Time but I’m popping in today to share my story about The Life of Lia’s Butterflies and Mama said it goes along with today’s blog prompt of a success story. I received my butterfly house from a special Facebook friend and blogger for my 2nd birthday.
Brenda knows I love butterflies and I was so surprised when I opened the package and saw a beautiful pink house for me to raise the butterflies in!
Before I get to my butterfly story I want to tell you a little more about Brenda. Mama and I love her so much and she loves to write poetry. When she published her book Writing Through the Soul, mama hurried to order a copy. There was one poem that mama read, it was Earth Angel. Brenda calls me her little Earth Angel and mama said the poem could have been written about me! The other special thing about this poem is it’s on page 7, mama’s special number! Brenda writes about feelings and thoughts, it’s a beautiful book you may want to check it out. This is mama’s blog she wrote about Brenda’s poetry book. http://themarthareview.com/writing-through-the-soul-book-review/
Lia’s Butterfly Story
Okay now on to my story about my beautiful butterflies!
After I received the butterfly house I received another package in the mail about a week later. It was a little cup with 5 little “worms” which I soon found out they were larva but I called them baby caterpillars! Each day they would get a little bigger and mama took pictures as they grew. I would watch them crawl around their little cup house and start climbing the sides to get to the top. These pictures are the first six days of my baby caterpillars. I couldn’t open the cup because it has their special food for them to grow so all we did was watch them everyday!
Look what they did on day 8, all the baby caterpillars climbed up the cup and attached themselves to the special paper on top of the cup. See how they are changing how they look? Mama showed me in the book that came with my kit how they are now call Chrysalis. It’s like a little house that each one is in so they can grow even more. They were very fragile once they got like this so we didn’t move the cup. After three days it was time to move them into the pink butterfly house!
This was a job for mommy and mama. They had to be very careful moving the Chrysalis from the cup and pin it to the side of the butterfly house.
Next we had to wait for the butterflies. Were we surprised one morning when we saw two butterflies fluttering around their house. These butterflies are Painted Ladies! I had to hurry and get their food. We made sugar water like the directions said and soaked cotton balls in it and dropped them to the bottom of the house and we also had a little dish filled with the sugar water.
The next day two more butterflies were born! We missed seeing it happen but I was so excited to see four butterflies. Look how colorful this butterfly is!
I carefully put my hand in the house and I had sugar water on my fingers so the butterflies came over and licked my fingers! Every day I would visit with my four butterflies and look how beautiful they were.
But look what happened the next day! Mama was walking past the table where their house was and she was getting all excited. I hurried over because I didn’t know what was wrong. The fifth butterfly was being born right before our eyes! Look at how the butterfly is almost out of his Chrysalis!
Mama ran for her phone to get a video and while it’s not the best, at least we got it! It was hard to get good video because we didn’t want the other butterflies to get out of their house so mama had to open the top just a tiny bit.
Now all five butterflies were fluttering around their house, eating the sugar water and all were healthy. I’m dropping more food in their house, they liked the purple flowers!
These are WOW photos of my butterflies taken by mommy with her new phone! Aren’t they beautiful? I’m so glad I got to learn about baby caterpillars and butterflies!
But soon it was time to take my butterfly house to my garden and let the butterflies go out into the world. I will miss them but I know they can’t stay in their little house, they need to be out in the garden with all the other butterflies we have in the yard. I carried the house out to my garden but before I opened the top I sat on the bench with them telling the butterflies how much I love them and hope they have fun fluttering around in my garden. I carefully set their pink house in the garden right under the Butterfly Crossing sign mommy got me for my birthday.
As I was saying “see you later little butterfly” this one came right in my hand! I didn’t move because they are so fragile I didn’t want the butterfly to get hurt. When the moved I my hand and the butterfly flew out! It was so excited watching them fly one by one out of the house.
What happened next was so exciting. The butterflies didn’t fly away, the went over to my flowers!
Mommy got a great video of me watching the butterflies fly free and she even got them in slow motion! What an experience I had watching the life of my butterflies! Now I want to get more and watch them grow and release those butterflies in the garden.
Speaking of mommy when she was about 5 years old, mommy had a butterfly house too! She raised Painted Ladies, he same kind of butterflies I did, how cool is that! This is mommy’s hand with her butterflies!
I hope you enjoyed seeing my butterfly pictures and videos and reading about me raising and releasing the butterflies, it was a great success story, don’t you think? I had as much fun writing my story with mama, The Life of Lia’s Butterflies as I did watching them. Now I can go back and read about them whenever I think about my beautiful butterflies and I think about Brenda too! I love you Brenda and thank you for giving me this beautiful memory!
That was so neat! I loved watching the video. That’s so cool that she got to have that experience. You guys are giving her such wonderful life experiences. Which, in my mind, is another success story!
We all enjoyed watching the different stages Jeanine. It was so cute when Lia carried the butterfly house out to her garden, set it on the bench and started talking to them. So many life experiences for sure and she (and I) love them all.
Wow, how beautiful…the world definitely needs more butterflies. I remember way back when I was in camp (shush on how long, LOL!) but we went hiking in the trails and came across the cacoons and I was going to take some of them home with me but didn’t I think my friend Robyn took some cacoons but ended up forgetting them behind that day! I kinda wish we took some of those home and did what Lia did! Thank You Lia for helping add some beauty into this world!
Even at Lia’s young age, she is so into nature Pamela. She sees little earth worms and calls them baby snakes! She eyes everything when outdoors, her latest was a teeny tiny dragonfly she spotted that I could bsrely see!

I loved reading about Lia’s butterflies. Thank-you Martha. I am so happy I could give your family this sweet memory.
You don’t know the memories Lia’s butterflies brought back Brenda! She so enjoyed watching them everyday as they grew and the frosting on the cake was watching the last butterfly emerge from the Chrysalis! That was exciting for me too!! What a wonderful friend you are! Hugs and love!
Beautiful story and now C is ready to get a Butterfly house and for us to learn about them in school and I can’t wait. I just hope we get a yellow Butterfly which would be C’s sister visiting from Heaven.
I’m sure Charlie would enjoy watching the stages of the butterflies and then releasing them in your garden. Most are painted ladies, more orange and black but whisper to them and they will fly up to heaven to your beautiful daughter.
Lia’s butterflies have definitely had a beautiful impact on all of us!!! thank you for sharing these photos and to Brenda too!!
It was so much fun watching Lia watch her butterflies but it also brought back memories of when her mommy did the same thing. Lia and I are happy you enjoyed them Vidya.
I really enjoyed this. What a great memory for you and Lia to share. Her delight at the butterflies getting born and flying into their garden was lovely. I am really happy that Lia likes butterflies.
It was great watching how exciting Lia was and she was so gentle with the butterflies. I’m so glad Lia loves nature, it’s such a beautiful part of life. Thanks for visiting Alice.
I love butterflies. Great post and videos.
Thanks Amanda. Lia had such a great time watching her butterflies hatch and then release them.
