Take a Walk Day

We are a week into the July Ultimate Blog Challenge and it’s be great to see so many new members join in plus of course reconnect on the site with “old” bloggers. With many of the “old” bloggers (and not in age but in previous challenges) we actually stay in touch even between the challenge month, it’s a great group to belong to! When I read the suggested topic for today’s blog post it said to write about something fun! But today is also National Father Daughter Take a Walk Day. So I decided to combine the two because taking a walk is also something fun to do!

I also sorta changed the National day and added Great Grandfather in front of father and Great Granddaughter in front of Daughter. After all a grandfather is still a father and a granddaughter is still a daughter.

It was raining this morning so Papa and Lia could only take a short stroll through the back yard but they got to see how the flowers were growing and have a good time before the rain started up again.

When I snapped this picture of their hands I didn’t realize I captured the garden stepping stones also. It’s perfect though.. Look for Angels in your Life, they are Everywhere couldn’t be more true! Love Blooms Here and Sunshine, Laughter and Friends Always Welcome two other stones with beautiful sayings. Papa and Lia worked together creating Lia’s Garden and it’s exciting to watch them work together at it most every day.

The idea of this day is to promote family bonding plus exercise and the memories made while they are together will stay with both the father and daughter. These walks can be long or short, they can be just walks or stop along the way for some fishing, it’s just a way to be together. A Father and Daughter can take a walk anyday, not just today. Children love to learn and walking, exploring or just being together is one way to make memories. This was an outing we all went on, Lia, her daddy and papa went fishing and while they didn’t catch any fish, it was a great time.

My father is no longer with my but I have so many wonderful memories together on our walks. We would go fishing in the spring and summer, walking along the shores of a nearby lake. We caught dinner many times! One of our many early morning walks was in the middle of winter, we would wake up at 4am, drive to Saratoga Lake, stop at the bait shop and then walk all the way across the lake to the best ice fishing stop! How I remember the good times my dad and I had not only walking but cutting the holes in the thick ice, setting up the tip-ups and waiting for that big catch! Yes it’s memories like this of my dad that stay in my heart forever.

Children are like sponges, they take everything in and remember it! Spending time with them whether going on a long hike or just a short walk will be a wonderful thing for them to look back it years later. So remember it doesn’t have to be a National Day to make it into a Take a Walk Day with your children, grandchildren or great grandchildren.

  1. Another Hallmark Holiday. Gotta love ’em.

Maybe Lia should start a card company Roy. She loves to draw and I love to post about the National days. Maybe someday there will be a LiaMark Card Company. 🤣

  2. Tears ran down my cheeks as I read this Martha. So, I will tell you a short story. Today, I saw a white butterfly. It reminded me of walks in the woods with my grandfather. You posted this. Much love to you and yours.

    • Martha says:

Brenda, the butterfly was definitely a sign from your grandfather! As long as the tears were happy ones, we have so much in common!

  3. What a sweet story about you and your father going fishing!! And how lovely to see Lia and GGpapa going for a walk. I agree that those are memories we cherish forever!

    • Martha says:

I hope Lia will remember some of the early activities she does with GGpapa Jeanine. I need to start putting my book together for when she graduates high school!

I miss being able to take walks with my dad but David’s dad is here and if I could get him out of his chair I wouldn’t mind walking with him and listening to stories he tells us. In the meantime David’s daughter’s are scattered but if Les knew about this I know she would have visited both her dad and also her grandfather. She is a true daddy and papa girl.

Great pictures and article. There are memories of those days, your article just pointed out to me that I should perhaps remember them more often. Living 3000 miles away from my daughters it is the wi=fi that keeps us in touch. But I do love to rake walks with my wife on my healthier days . Walks life us up and a good nature walk with my wife and our dogs can really set the pace for my day.

Nothing better than a nice nature walk Chef William. I love walking along the intercoastal waterway or along the ocean shore early morning when we have the beach to ourselves, just peace and quiet.

  7. I had no idea of the significance of this day. Father-daughter walk day brings me smiles. I used to walk with my father when I was little. I especially enjoyed the quiet of the night walks we used to take.

    Love your photos!
