Tackling the Master Bedroom Closet

I’ve been busy de-cluttering the past month. First I had to get the garage half way organized so I could set up for our annual community fall garage sale as I de-cluttered the rooms. Then my major project was tackling the master bedroom closet. Remember, I’m one who doesn’t like to get rid of things if they still fit and in good condition. The closet was filled with clothes we have had since the ’70’s! But I knew it was time to get serious, if I hadn’t worn something for the past few years, chances are I won’t start wearing them now.

Okay, this first picture comes with a warning…DO NOT LAUGH!!!! I start out with neat cubbies and then this happens! I don’t know how, could it be I have too many clothes? Yes that’s probably it but after I went through each cubby and downsized everything, look how it looks now! Oh and by the way I do have a dresser it’s just easier for me to see my shirts, jeans and shorts this way. You might say these pictures are worth a thousand words!

While going through corners in the closet I found a few more cubby panels so I was able to make two more! Then I put all our towels and bathing suits in a zippered storage tote and it fits perfect on the top cubbies. The shelves on the side are all my fabrics for the Minky blankets Lia and I make and even that is a bit more organized now.

Okay, now this one you can laugh at! When going through my pile of jeans I found my first pair of Jordache jeans way back from the 1980’s! And guess what, they still fit! I always liked the pocket design on Jordache so I moved these to the top of my jean pile.

Moving right along through my closet piles, I had two large comforters and a mattress pad that we don’t use but someday they might come in handy. I had two zippered storage totes so they were perfect for two comforters and then I noticed the large Coral box that my robot vacuum came in and I was saving for “something”. Well the something was the mattress pad and I squeezed it in the box but was a bit to fluffy and the velcro kept popping. (Kinda like jeans when they don’t fit – LOL) I solved that problem by using some heave cording to snug the box together. Now they are stored on the top shelves that still need a big of organizing but at least there’s progress below.

Tada, I now have a (fairly) neat closet and can walk in it without having to step over things. Do you think there is hope for me? The next project is to go through all the clothes that are hanging up.

I kept looking at all of Rich’s shirts and slacks and couldn’t get myself to go through them. Each shirt had memories, either of him wearing them while holding the grandbabies or when we went out to dinner. But after Hurricane Helene devastated the mountain towns of North Carolina so many local organizations stepped up and took tractor trailer loads of clothing and items up to those that lost everything. One of our neighbors is manager of a local restaurant and when I heard they were trying to fill a tractor trailer I knew it was the perfect time to go through Rich’s clothes. Since we love that area and Rich always was so happy in the mountains, I knew he would want them going to that area. I feel like a part of him will still always be there. I felt good when I dropped them off and not only one tractor trailer, but they had two! I did save some of his “special” ones and will be making memory pillows out of them. The picture on the left is only part of my load and the other picture is stuff that was in the closet no more. That was sorted out for donation or recycling center.

Since I found new homes for our industrial sewing machines that were in the garage and I had extra storage in the master bedroom closet, I moved all the sewing supply bins up there.

Then I looked at how crowded the sewing machine was next to my dresser and seeing all the extra closet space, I decided to turn that into a sewing nook! I even organized the top shelf!

My master bedroom closet and now sewing nook are just about finished and now all I have left is a few things to organize in the master bedroom and I’ll be in good shape on my de-cluttering in these rooms. Since I couldn’t sleep the other night I was reorganizing the bedroom at 3AM and moved my grandfather’s truck to here.

This was my mother’s rocking chair and it had been in another bedroom but by moving grandpa’s trunk this was the perfect spot. Mom even made the quilt and hand embroidered the horse heads back in 1981. Now everything is perfect. (For now anyways!)

I’ve still managed to keep the upstairs collector room and guest bath organized so that is a big plus for me. Little by little I’m de-cluttering room by room. It feels so good to get the stuff that has been piled up going to new places.

Come take a tour of the decluttered upstairs! I’ll always find more things to purge and find a new home for but I’m pleased with the outcome so far. Next I will tackle the other two bedrooms that I still call Zac’s and Alex’s rooms since this is where they always hung out.

  1. WOW!! Look at all you’ve accomplished! And how brave of you to go through Rich’s things so you could donate them to people who need them. I love that you found a pair of Jordache jeans. Good for you for creating so much peace in your master bedroom. Bet you’ll sleep a little better.

I haven’t been able to go through any of his things but when I heard the trucks were going to the area that Rich loved so much I knew it was a sign. He would be so happy knowing a part of him is where he always wanted to be. Yes, I found my old Jordache jeans! LOL

Martha, you did a phenomenal job on so many levels. Rich’s clothes will be cherished by hurricane’s victims.
Did you even remember your 1980s jeans? I think they’re epic, and how cool they still fit!

Thanks Tamara, when I heard where the trucks were going with the clothing, I knew it was the right time to have his clothes go to his favorite area. I feel like a bit of Rich is still in the mountains he loved so much. Actually I forgot about the Jordache jeans, they were stashed on the bottom of a pile!

Your closet if beautiful! What a great job you did!!!! As someone who can create huge chaos, I am impressed and inspired by your decluttering!

Thanks Alice, I’ve found that if I start in a small corner of a room I can get more accomplished quicker. Before I would have toss all my shirts on the floor and reorganize them.. Now I do one cubby at a time and I get so much satisfaction when it’s all completed!

  4. Love this! Tackling a master bedroom closet can feel like such a daunting task, but your approach and organization tips make it seem totally doable. It’s always so satisfying to clear out and create space—thanks for the inspiration!

This was definitely a daunting task Jasmine but I knew I had to set my mind to it and take the challenge! Now I not only have an organized closet, but Lia has a little sewing nook.
