Stretching Food
Well, I’m not really stretching food but I like to make meals go as far as they can. One way I do this is by taking a piece of meat and add things to it so it will stretch for either more people or even have left overs the following night.
I got a great deal on a 1 3/4 pound package of top round steak. Regular price was $7.20 per pound so the package was $12.60, but by using my Bi-Lo card, the price was $4.70 per pound which brought the price down to $8.23. But it didn’t stop there, the package also had a red sticker for $4.00 off so I got 1 3/4 pounds of top round steak for $4.23!
So I took the two good sized pieces of steak and sliced it in about 1/2″ wide strips. For some reason it’s like magic when you cut meat or chicken in strips, it seems to double the amount you started with! Next I sprayed the bottom of my pan with oil and added two sliced up onions and let them brown slightly. I then added the beef and stir fried it and the meat and onions were ready in about 15 minutes.
Bi-Lo also had corn on sale for 40 cents an ear and huge baking potatoes for 99 cents per pound. Each potato weighed almost 1/2 pound!
The beef cost $4.23, the 2 onions were maybe 50 cents worth, the corn was $2.00 and the potatoes were $1.00. The delicious meal for hubby and I cost $7.73! But wait, I have enough steak and onions left for another meal!! You might notice the extra potato skins on my plate, that’s because I take them from hubby!! I love the skins smothered in butter!!
It’s almost like a game for me to see how much I can save on groceries then save even more by stretching food that I prepare and cook!

You got a good deal while shopping and was able to stretch your meal further. I find it a game to see how far I can stretch a meal. I like reading and learning how others do it to.
I too like play the game to see how far I can stretch a meal Sandy. Now if exercise stretching was just as fun I’d be all set. LOL I can’t wait to try your chicken stretching meal.
I agree, it is a “game”, one we like to win!
Yes it is Savvy Age! Plus I don’t have to cook dinner today, just warm up leftovers which are sometimes better the second day!
Love it! As you know I also a fan of making double meals.
Yes Andria, I enjoy reading your stretching meals also! With the price of meats, we have to stretch as much as we can. We had delicious left overs tonight! Thanks for stopping by.
