Stale Donuts and Cinnamon Butter

Stale donuts and Cinnamon butter doesn’t really sound appetizing, does it? But wait until you see how the two came together!

Today is Throwback Thursday and I’m sharing a blog I wrote two years ago. My granddaughter used to work at Krispy Kreme so she was always bring donuts home. But we can only eat so many donuts before they go stale. I came up with a few recipes to use up the stale donuts. One was donut French Toast and the other was donut Monkey Bread. Monkey Bread is made from cut up pieces of Pillsbury biscuit dough in a tube but I cut up stale glazed donuts and used them instead.

Fast forward to yesterday and I had two stale donuts so I decided to make my donut French Toast for breakfast. One tip if you make French Toast from donuts, make sure to soak them in the egg and milk mixture long enough to get them fully coated. Then cook in a frying pan with melted butter.

This time instead of putting syrup on them, I used cinnamon butter. One of my friends saw my Facebook post and asked about Cinnamon butter so I told her I would write a blog about it today. It’s very easy and oh so good! There are a few ways I make this, the quickest is to just take softened butter and add ground cinnamon to it, mixing it together. But I also found a Texas Roadhouse copycat recipe that I tried and it’s delicious with only four ingredients. It calls for confectioners sugar and that seem to make it a bit more creamy than using just butter and the honey gives it an extra touch of sweetness.

Cinnamon Butter Recipe

1/2 cup room temperature butter

1/4 cup honey (not whipped or creamed)

1/4 cup powdered sugar

! teaspoon ground cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together until smooth and store in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Sometimes I cut the recipe in half since it’s so quick and easy to make then it will be fresh when I eat it. This is not only good on French Toast but I also use it on rolls, bagels and Hush Puppies.

If you make this I’d love to hear how you like the taste of the simple recipe!

I love how creative and resourceful you are, Martha! Whether it’s using up stale donuts or repurposing items you already have to help organize your kitchen cabinets, I am always impressed by what you come up with!

Ooo,I knew I should have picked up day old donuts at Bierly Brewing yesterday, before playing after school taxi for my bonus granddaughter!

A dedicated gluten free brewery and bakery, in what was a bike store for at least 50 years (so a nice clean slate!) it’s one of our town’s treasures!

The maple bars … onion rings, fried pickles!! I loved maple bars as a kid, but was disappointed so many times with mediocre maple frosting – Bierly’s rotate their weekend specials, and with the 1st a Sunday, will likely Jane maple bars next weekend as well!!

I, too, often reheat baked goods! This morning, I’ll slice my last two (homemade) sourdough muffins, put a dab of coconut oil in my little ‘French toast/ grilled cheese’ cast iron pan, and reheat them.
Mama and I made cinnamon sugar and kept it in a slice jar, to sprinkle on buttered toast any time!

That sounds like an amazingly delicious bakery Nadya, maple bars, ymmm! So many cool ways to save food from being tossed out, I love sourdough also. I always keep cinnamon sugar on hand for toast!

Wow – I’m gonna need to try that with some apple cider cinnamon donuts from the local orchard market!!
