Song of the Day 7

Song I like to drive to

I have been a fan of the Alabama Band since before they were Alabama. The band was formed by three cousins and a drummer under the name Wildcountry and started out playing for tips at the Bowery in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina back in the late 60’s and early 70’s. When the Alabama Theater opened, Rich and I would fly down for their shows.

In 1977 they changed their name to Alabama Band when GRT records signed them on for a one-record contract. After the record company went bankrupt the following year, Alabama Band self promoted their music through independent radio promoters to play “I Wanna Come Over.” This got the attention of MDJ Records who signed them on. “I Wanna Come Over” became their first radio hit, reaching the top 40 in the Billboard country chart. I just so happen to have a copy of this single kept under glass, since my sister knew the band personally and they held practice jams in her home in Myrtle Beach way back when she just out of high school.

But back to a song that I like to drive to is another Alabama Band song. It seems like everyone is always rushing and when we are out driving their song I’m in a Hurry (And Don’t Know Why) is my favorite. The chorus of the song tells it all… I’m in a hurry to get things done
Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.

I’m In a Hurry was a hit in 1992 and is a song that has a super beat, great words and fun to listen to. The band announced their Farewell Tour in 2002 and played their last show in October 2004.

To celebrate the group’s 40th anniversary, Alabama started touring again in 2013 for the Back to the Bowery tour, the Myrtle Beach club where they first became professional musicians. Rich and I were lucky enough to get free front row tickets to not one but two of their shows at the Alabama Theater in Myrtle Beach! Randy even tossed his guitar pick to my at the end of the show. I was able to get some awesome photos of the concerts with my Samsung Galaxy.

There are a lot a great songs from Alabama Band and one of my favorites is I’m in a Hurry for a song I like to drive to. What is your favorite song you like to drive to?

  1. I love Alabama, too. I have never seen them live though.

  2. Alabama was one of the few country and western bands that I enjoyed. Thanks for the back story.

I remember the first time we came down to SC and hear Alabama band. We went back home to NY and I called the radio station if they would play one of their songs. That’s how Alabama was brought to the upstate NY, Roy!

I listened to Alabama back in the day. They were one of my brother’s favorite bands.

That is so cool about you seeing the concerts and gaining a guitar pick, too!!!

I’ve got some cool things from my sister when they use to jam in her house! Back before they were “somebody.” Their songs have such great meaning, love Angels Among Us Nancy.

Good song. I like Alabama but I’m a Harry Chapin fanatic. I first heard the song Taxi driving home from work at 1:30am one morning in 1972. Harry Chapin’s death in 1981 was devastating to me and to all his fans. Harry was also a great humanitarian. His cause was hunger in the world. He founded WHY, World Hunger Year. He preformed 400 concerts a year. 200 of them benefit concerts for his cause. Harry’s life affected many people and almost 40 years after his death he still has a large following. Harrychapin.com

I like the band Alabama. Since I can’t drive I end up listening to the sports shows that my grandpa puts on when we go out.
