Song of the Day 27

Song that breaks my heart

When I had to come up with a song that breaks my heart for Song of the Day 27 I thought for a few minutes and listened to a few songs I had in mind.

The song Running Bear Little White Dove was written by The Big Bopper and sung by Johnny Preston in 1959. Some may remember The Big Bopper died in a plane crash with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens on February 3, 1959. The song was not released until August 1959, six months after The Big Bopper’s death.

On the banks of the river stood runnin’ bear, young Indian brave
On the other side of the river stood his lovely Indian maid
Little white dove was-a her name, such a lovely sight to see
But their tribes fought with each other so their love could never be

Runnin’ bear loved little white dove with a love big as the sky
Runnin’ bear loved little white dove with a love that couldn’t die

He couldn’t swim the raging river ’cause the river was too wide
He couldn’t reach little white dove, waiting on the other side
In the moonlight he could see her blowing kisses ‘cross the waves
Her little heart was beating faster, waiting there for her brave

Runnin’ bear loved little white dove with a love big as the sky
Runnin’ bear loved little white dove with a love that couldn’t die

Runnin’ bear dove in the water, little white dove did the same
And they swam out to each other through the swirling stream they came
As their hands touched and their lips met, the ragin’ river pulled them down
Now they’ll always be together in that happy hunting ground

Runnin’ bear loved little white dove with a love big as the sky
Runnin’ bear loved little white dove with a love that couldn’t die

This song breaks my heart when I see how much the Indian brave and Indian maid love each other but due to their tribes hatred to each other, their love could never be. But the two longed to be together, they went into the raging river, shared a kiss and were pulled down by the swift current and drown.

Song of the Day 27 is so sad but as the lyrics say, Now they’ll always be together in their happy hunting ground all because they families had hate for each other. The children took it open themselves to be together no matter what. So very sad.

  1. Nancy Smith says:

Wow…that is a beautiful love story though.

It is quite sad how much hatred is in the world even still today.

I wonder what their families thought after they lost their children. Probably blamed the other tribe…a vicious cycle.

I was thinking the same thing Nancy. When you look at the world today, there isn’t a lot that has never changed from this song. Yes it seems to be a vicious cycle.

  2. I didn’t remember this song until you reminded me. Romeo and Juliet in an Indian vignette. (Of course, West Side Story used the same vignette.)
