Song of the Day 18

A song from the day I was born

Since I don’t remember a song from the day I was born, which is the daily prompt, I did some searching for today’s Song of the Day 18.

I found Cruising Down the River by Blue Barron and His Orchestra is my song! This song was written by Eily Beadell and Nell Tollerton. Ray Charles sang this song in concert halls in the 1930’s. Early recordings of Cruising Down the River was recorded by Lou Preager and his Orchestra with Paul Rich singing vocals in January 1946 on the Columbia record label. There were numerous other recordings in 1949 but the one that is “my song” was recorded by Blue Barron and his Orchestra. It reached the Best Seller chart on January 21, 1949 and on March 12, 1949 it reached the U.S. Best Sellers in stores as the number one single.
That’s when I was born, March 12, 1949 so I have named song of the day 18 as my song, a song from the day I was born!

Thing is once I listened to this song, I have heard it before! I think it may have been on some of the old westerns or movies I’ve watched. But where ever I’ve heard it, now that I listened to it again, I’ve got Cruising Down the River stuck in my head!

This Song of the Day is perfect for my and this Challenge is not only coming up with a song to go with the daily prompt but it’s interesting to learn more about the history of the different songs! Do you have a song from the day you were born?

  1. I remember this song. It was featured on a black and white movie or two. (Perhaps they were actually in color- but TV’s back then only were only displaying black and white!)

So many of the songs you have featured are new for me; and while some are familiar, I have not heard them for a while too..
