Share an Important Lesson
Today is day two of the UBC and the suggested challenge is to share an important lesson you have learned and how it has shaped your journey. Well for me this is going to be a humorous blog about how I spent the first day of January.
The beginning of every year I try to begin organizing my “couch” office. Yesterday was no different and this is my story.
It started by me opening my secret candy drawer and it was a mess! I stash my special candy there so it’s on hand when needed and I don’t have to leave my office or wake up Snowball who is usually sleeping on the couch next to me. But throughout the year as I add to the drawer, I forget what’s on the bottom and then I totally forget about the candy drawer!
So my organizing started just doing that one drawer and now all my candy is organized! Gotta to the important things first!
But other things ended up in the drawers so I had to put those in their place. That made me open another drawer and I started organizing my phone charger draw. Meanwhile hubby was cleaning his pistols and grabbed his box of supplies from the hall closet.
Back to my corner, I found some things that should have been in the closet so I left my corner and went to the closet. IT WAS A MESS with wrapping paper and bags that had fallen off the top shelf and ended on the floor. Now I’m pulling everything out of the closet and re-organizing that.
We know have three different areas that are being worked on and a big mess everywhere. LOL I decided to stick to the closet since I had blocked the front door. I folded the bags and tissue paper that could be reused and stored that back on the shelf. All the wrapping paper on tubes is neatly stored in the tube holder and I even have space to store the vacuum where it’s supposed to be. And I have a emptied hall again! Hubby finished his projects and I completed organizing all five drawers in my office! Mission accomplished and now it’s time to make dinner. More on that another day!
So what has today’s important message proved to me? I’m not sure but I had fun starting on my re-organization for the new year and I’m moving from room to room to continue on my challenge. The biggest challenge will be the garage but I’m set on reducing clutter this year! Oh so that’s the message! No matter how or where I start, I WILL complete my project whatever it may be and get rid of clutter! Thanks for the suggested topic Paul!
The candy drawer. I love it because I forget I’ve stored candy in it. I love the jelly beans I’ve stored in it and finding them is more than a treat. It is a hard-won piece of sugar which by the time I’ve found it is like a rock.
LOL done that Linda! I just found some “soft” candy apple caramels. My taste buds started flowing until I went to bit into it and nearly broke a tooth! LOL
You have inspired me Martha. I am going to have to do some cleaning.
Start in a small area Brenda, I find I can accomplish a drawer or shelf and when I see it neat and orderly I get excited to move on to another!
Yes decluttering a room at a time is a noble effort. I am also in the process of putting clothing in their proper place. And my work things, too, since I just retired. Ah such sweet words!!
Oh putting clothes away has always been my downfall Kate! I would take the basket of clean clothes upstairs and not get them put away until it was next weeks laundry day! I’d be living out of a basket. LOL But last fall I purged our master bedroom closet and I was so excited that I could wake in it without have a maze to go through that I also started putting the clothes away as soon as the basket was there. I’m still doing this 5 months later! WOO HOO there is still hope for me.
Good job with getting rid of the clutter. Very systemic! I am not good at that so I can feel free to admire the trait in others!
It took me years to realize I don’t need everything that is stashed in every corner Alice. As we get older I realize someone will have to clean all this out when our days are done. On a good note, I reorganized the kitchen counters during the October UBC and they are still neat!
Oh, well done – and yay, floor!
Isn’t it crazy how we can forget what’s in an *important* nook or drawer?! I also tend to do some major dethugging and reshuffling at this time of year. I moved into my new cottage in April, and my art studio/ library becomes my stashing ground – plus I have stuff in a storage unit that I need to sort and pare down …
I find that starting is the hardest thing for me. Once I put my mind to it I can get it done. I also find if I start with a small area and can stay there and finish it, I’m able to see progress and then I want to move on to another small area. We’ll both get there!
What a productive day! You’re a good motivator, Martha. I might have to follow your example.
I never used to be Victoria, I save everything! But now is the time to get serious and cull the clutter!
Oh Martha, you are again “right up my street”! For me, one clearing leads to another area of clearing, and do I ever need New Year clearing! Congrats on your progress, and thanks for the inspiration!
Yes I can never stay put in one are too long Kebba! But I’m excited that the new year is here and I can declutter again.
This reminds me of that book, “If You Give A Mouse a Cookie…” In your case, it’s “If You Open Up a Drawer…” LOL. This happens to me all the time. Decluttering is a full-time job that I’ll never get ahead of. LOL. XO
I love that quote Elisa, I never know what I will find when I open a drawer because I have a habit of just sticking things in a drawer and saying I’ll find a place for it later! But now I have the mindset to get this clutter gone!
You are so good at organizing your things! And what a nice fresh start for the new year. I hope you quickly get everything in place.
Thanks Jeanine! I enjoy saving things but I also enjoy organizing them so I can find things! Lately Rich and I are in a deep purge, we need to downsize our clutter. The garage will be started today but that will be a never ending project!
Matt and I are busy cleaning out our little apartment. It feels so good to get rid of junk we don’t need.
It takes me some time to get into de-cluttering Amanda but once I start and see progress I feel great and want to keep going!
