Sewing Feels Familiar
We are up to day 23 of the Cornerstone Content Blog Challenge with the topic being content that feels familiar. This is an easy topic today because something that feels familiar is sewing! Lia helped make a Mickey Minky and valance for her little friend’s birthday and Christmas gift. All this sewing feels familiar because Lia’s mommy would sew with me when she was Lia’s age! Watching Lia sew brings back memories of Alexandra and me sewing together.
Carlos has been in love with Mickey Mouse since he was born 3 years ago. So when it was time to come up with a birthday gift Lia said, “Mickey!” So off we went on a search for Mickey Mouse fabric. We found the perfect pattern with a gray background with little Mickey and Minnie faces scattered over the fabric. Off course Lia picked a red Minky fabric for the background to bring out the red touches.
Lia has been helping me pin and sew pillows but this is the first time she’s worked on a blanket and valance. When she came in the room she said, “Ma are you sewing?” I answered yes I was getting ready to make Carlos a blanket and Lia said, “I’ll help you!” So Lia and I starting working on the Mickey Minky blanket.
After we finished sewing the Mickey Minky (try saying that 3 times really fast!) it was time to head over to Carlos’ birthday playday.
Lia and Carlos play so well together and she watched him as he opened his blanket. Do you think Carlos has enough Mickey and friends?
Our next project was to make a Mickey valance to match the blanket. Carlos had a rod pocket valance but I decided to come up with a “big boy” style valance. Lia helped me pin the fabric and lining together and we added a red insert and rod pocket to match the red Minky on the back on the blanket.
Since Carlos and his mommy and daddy won’t be home on Christmas Lia and I delivered his gift the other night. I love the style of the valance and it looks like Carlos is happy tucked under his Mickey Minky.
Carlos and Lia had a great time playing for a bit but of course when it was time to go home, Lia didn’t want to go. She crawled up in Carlos’ bed and said, “I’m going to sleep.”
While watching Lia pin and sew it brought back memories and sewing feels familiar because Alexandra and I did the same thing when she was Lia’s age.
How cute to see pictures of both Lia and her mother sewing! And the Minky was lovely. I am sure that Carlos will love it for a very long time.
When I’m sewing with Lia, it brings back memories of when Alex would sew with me Jeanine.
My mom sewed and made many dresses for us when we were little and also clothes for our dolls. She used an old black Singer machine. I learned a few sewing skills in 4-H and also in Home Ec. in high school. Zippers, buttonholes, and sleeves left me with a bad feeling towards sewing.
Later, I tried quilting but lacked the patience for a big project. Making doll clothes is about my speed these days.
I think we either have the sewing gene in us or many not Virginia. My mom could knit and crochet beautiful but I could only do a running stich. Our daughter’s entered many garments in 4H County fair and went on to State fair. Doll clothes are fun to make, you gotta keep Toni will dressed!
Martha, what an amazing set you two made for Carlos! How sharp of Lia to exclaim, “Mickey” when it was time to think of a gift for Carlos! I’m so glad you found just the right Mickey fabric.
Carlos was so excited when he say Mickey! He is such a sweet little one, always smiling and happy just like Lia. Thanks for visiting Kebba.
Martha, what an amazing set you two made for Carlos! How sharp of Lia to exclaim, “Mickey” when it was time to think of a gift for Carlos! I’m so glad you found just the right Mickey fabric. I love that you get the little ones sewing so young. Now I will try to remember how young I was when I started sewing.
I was brought up learning to sew by watching my grandmother Kebba. Teaching Alex and having her help out in the business and now Lia learning brings back so many wonderful memories from my grandmother. I hope Lia continues to hold on to the memories as she gets older.
I remember when my grandmother sewed. It was a foot-cranked Singer machine (from 1918, I believe). And, I remember when my mother demanded she get a sewing machine- that never left the box. (My mother could never sew a stitch. I learned how to sew- badly- but since I was a guy, it was good enough. We are talking 1950’s.) I remember my wife wanting to sew fabrics- we spent a fortune on supplies. That remained where they were until we divorced and it needed to be cleared out of the house.
I taught all my grands to hand sew when they were very young, the boys and girls. A few have used their skills if even just for buttons or mending. Ah yes, my grandmother had the treadle machine also Roy. I still have the base of it, not sure what happened to the head.
It’s almost like sewing is comfort food! It also is a pretty neat meditation! Sew On!!
Yes Kate, sewing is comfort food! If I’m a bit under the weather or my head is spinning with too much to think about I love to go out and sew. Maybe because I think of my grandmother when sewing. It’s so adorable to hear Lia come out and say, “oh Ma are you sewing?”
I glad you love to sew.
When I’m sewing it brings back memories of me with my grandmother Amanda. I’m hoping that will be what Lia remembers too.
