Sewing Advice
WOW we are on Day 16 of the Cornerstone Content Blog Challenge! That means we are over half way to the end! Today’s topic is to write content that offers expert advice. Since I have been sewing professionally for over 50 years, I figured I could be considered an expert in the field so I’m sharing some sewing advice with you.
The number one advice no matter what you are sewing, from garments to window treatments and everything in between, make sure you have a good pair of fabric scissors and NEVER use them on anything except fabric! Also make sure everyone in the house knows this rule!
Did you know if you put the sewing machine needle in with the flat side on the wrong side your thread will either break or the underside of the thread will be all bunched up when sewing?
Did you know that if the top stitch is lying flat on the fabric instead of it pulling through the bottom it’s caused from the bobbin to be either incorrectly threaded the bobbin tension? Same with the bottom thread, if that is just a flat thread it’s caused from the top thread tension, incorrect threading, or the needle incorrectly inserted.
This is a blog I wrote a few years back with some Sewing Secrets I’m sharing with you. http://themarthareview.com/sewing-secrets/
Do you have any sewing advice or secrets that you have learned if you sew?
Thanks Martha.I need machine sewing advice.Bookmarked the other post.
Glad it helped you Amrita.
My sewing advice would be “hire a seamstress!” LOL. But from a style point of view, I encourage people to have alterations done if they can afford it, rather than just putting up with clothes that don’t fit as well as they should. When I worked outside the home, I did it all the time. When budgeting for clothes, I just mentally added in the cost of getting it altered. And the result was unparalled before or since. Even in inexpensive clothes, you can look like a million bucks, if they fit you like they were made for you!
You are so right Jeanine! I actually started my business doing alterations and it just growing from one thing to another.
I barely cope with a needle and thread. But, I do remember the foot operated sewing machine my grandmom had.
Oh yes the treadle machine Roy! I found an old base heading for the trash and I turned it into a a table!
i never learned to use the sewing machine (my mom did but she does not have her foot operated one anymore; and now my daughter enjoys sewing – she has an electric one).. i will share these tips with her..
as for me, i can sew a button on…
Sewing is becoming a lost art Vidya. I’m so glad your daughter enjoys sewing. Keep her interested and she will keep sewing. Sewing on a button is good!
Thanks for the tips. I miss sewing. Sadly, my vision issues, and a broken machine, has me not sewing anymore. I miss it though.
Awww I’m so sorry you can’t sew anymore Amanda.
Charlie is going to take Sewing for Homeschooling and with my grandmother not her to offer tips its nice to know I know a expert Charlie can ask questions to and learn from. As your teaching Lia he can follow along and make his own Pillow. If only Santa would bring me a Sewing Machine a Cricut I would be all set.
That is great Glenda! When he starts, I’ll be ready to help in any way I can! I’m so proud of how Charlie is doing in home school.
