Rusty’s Progress
Today’s topic for Day 21 of the Cornerstone Content Blog Challenge is content that delivers results. For the September challenge I wrote a blog to Welcome Rusty to our Family. Today I’m sharing some of the results in Rusty’s Progress over the past three months.
Rusty is a cute beagle who joined our family on September 15th, the day before he turned two months old. This is the blog I wrote to Welcome Rusty to our Family. He was so tiny when we brought him home, only weighed about 5 pounds.
When he had his last vet check a few weeks ago, he was up to 15 pounds!
From the time he became a member of our family we started working on his potty training. He actually learned quick on going to the door and just stand there. After we started asking if he had to go potty Rusty would run to the door. We started taking him out on leash even though our yard is totally fenced in and showing him the best area for him to go. He had a few accidents but for a puppy he did very well. After he knew the yard and he was better at coming when we called his name we let him out on his own.
Rusty is learning to walk on leash and sits when we stop. It’s not a perfect sit but he’s learning. We took him on his first hike and he did good.
The one thing he is great at is running to fetch his ball. I have him sit, throw the ball and he runs and brings it back.
He is so full of energy and needs running exercise outdoors so he can be halfway calm inside. I’m looking forward to taking him on walks as I do the same to add some exercise to my healthy living plan.
Lia loves to sit on the floor with Rusty or cuddle together with their Minky blankets. He has free rein in the house except he’s not allowed in Lia’s Princess playroom.
We made a “wall” from puppy pen panels so Lia can be in her playroom and Rusty can still see her but can’t get in. Look at him sticking his little tongue out at her!
We had a few extra pet panels so the three worked perfect to keep Rusty in the kitchen when we are eating. Again he can see us and he has lots more room than in his crate. Rusty is very vocal and we haven’t figured out how to tell him to please be quiet. I’m told that puppies will be puppies until at least a year. Hopefully he will have a few more manners in time.
For only being five months old Rusty listens fairly well. He doesn’t always pay attention but isn’t that true about people at times? Other than the one “accident” when Rusty toppled the Christmas tree, he hasn’t been destructive. It will be interesting to see how Rusty’s progress is when he turns a year old!
He has made lots of progress and your training definitely got good results with him! I’m so glad you guys brought him into the family, and that he and Lia get along so well.
Rusty still has a ways to go Jeanine but for 5 months old he’s learning. I loves chasing his ball and bringing it back to me.
Martha, what great results you are getting with Rusty! He still seems small– will he be a small dog, or will he get larger? Those portable puppy fences look terrific. More visual inclusion for Rusty, and more easy moving around for everyone else. Perfect!
Rusty is a 13″ beagle so he probably won’t get much taller but should fill out a bit more. Hard to believe he was about 5 pounds when we got him in September, now he’s over 15 pounds! I love the puppy fences and since I got this one to review it didn’t cost anything. But we are hooked on them and will be purchasing another one to put around our vegetable garden in the spring.
It’s great when a young child grows up with a pet. S/he learns that all living things have similar learning curves and can share observations (even if the dog doesn’t understand what it’s being told)
I love how Rusty tips his head to the side as I’m talking to him Roy. It’s like “I hear you but don’t have a clue what you are saying.” LOL
Awe, he’s so cute. Great post.
He’s learning Amanda. Lia loves Rusty so much.
