I’m going to tell you a story about me. I don’t like to spend money unnecessarily and I think that’s why I save so much stuff thinking that I can use it somewhere else, sometime. Whether it be boxes, packaging from shipping products or things that I feel I or someone else can use, I stack things up for repurposing again! Sometimes I have an idea when organizing a room for needing something that I don’t have. But I don’t run out and buy something if I can find what I’m looking for already in the house, I just move things around. However since I started my de-cluttering challenge in January 2021 I have been cautious about saving things that might never have a purpose since I’m keeping things neat and orderly now. This is what happened the other day, I moved it from there to here! And my story begins….

This starts back to when we de-cluttered my computer room and turned it into Lia’s Princess Playroom. Everything that went in her new room were toys and things she already had plus an old bookcase that was upstairs storing things that hadn’t been looked into for years.

She still had fabric cubes with games, puzzles, and other toys in the TV room until we could find someplace to put them. I wanted to find a toy box like her mommy had when she was little. It was a toybox across the bottom with two book shelves but I couldn’t find the right color, design or it was too expensive. So we waited, thinking maybe I could find a used one online like the super bargain I found for Lia’s beautiful kitchen!

Sometimes I just move on and figure something will come to me when I’m not thinking about it. That’s just what happened the other day! We have an old foot locker that we brought down when we moved from upstate New York in 1994. Again this was something I brought down thinking surely I could use it somewhere. It ended up at the foot of our bed, filled with old decorating magazines that should have been trashed years ago.

So that’s when I got my brainstorm, why not use that for Lia’s toy box! It’s sturdy and has lots of room but the finish was scuffed and didn’t look all that great. So Rich and I pulled it downstairs and surveyed the foot locker. While it wasn’t perfect, I figured it would be perfect for a toy box. We just happened to have some left over pink paint from Lia’s outdoor bench so we decided to paint the top pink. Lia was more than willing to help pop out with that.

After the paint was dry on Lia’s new toy box it was time to move it to her Princess room. The first thing Lia did was check to make sure the paint was really dry and then she opened it to check to make sure all her games and puzzles were there. The pink top looks so bright and cheerful! Lia loves stickers so I figured she could add stickers around the bottom of the toy box to jazz it up.

I had some sparkly star stickers on my computer hutch doors and Lia thought they would look better on her new toy box and I think they do to!

So little by little Lia’s new Princess Playroom is still getting new (or almost new) things added. The next to rearrange will be moving her white with pink trim bookcase that is upstairs and exchange it for the small bookcase she has now and doesn’t match with anything. But at the time I added it for her books it worked well, I just forgot about her larger one upstairs!

I like repurposing things and by moving them from one room to another to gives the room a new look. Now Lia has more room to store her games and after she decorates it with stickers it will look super! So instead of purchasing a new toy box, I found a way of repurposing again and saving money along the way! I love repurposing something we already have to both save money and save things from the landfill Angie. By painting part of it pink it goes great in Lia’s playroom!

  3. That is beautiful, Martha!! I love how you could see it’s potential to be refurbished into something so perfect for that room. So sometimes, it’s really good that you don’t get rid of things, because that “new thing” was free!

Thanks Jeanine. I love repurposing things and even though I was still “using” it by having it at the foot of the bed, we didn’t need it there. Just a touch of pink and it changed the look into a cute toy box and didn’t cost anything!

Re using things is always a good idea.
