Recipe Fail
It doesn’t happen often but there are times when Lia and I are baking and we have a recipe fail. That’s what happened when we make Special K No -Bake Bars. But just because they failed doesnt mean we didn’t come up with a delicious plan of our own!
Lia had just finished making brownies but she wanted to bake something else so I found a quick and easy bar recipe made with Special K cereal and peanut butter. https://www.averiecooks.com/holiday-special-k-bars/ We followed the recipe except I didn’t have corn syrup so I made my own from sugar and water. We added the ingredients for the bars and patted them in the pan then melted the chocolate chips.
Everything was fine for the bar part but the melted chocolate was too thick to pour over the top. I scooped it out of the bowl and plopped spoonfuls around hoping I could spread it but no luck. So now Lia and I are looking at a pan filled with chunks of chocolate and Special K with peanut butter.
It didn’t take long to come up with our Special K snack mix! I took a wooden spoon and chopped the bar mix and chocolate into small pieces. Of course Lia had to add her special touch of sprinkles to our creation.
While we had a recipe fail when making the Special K bars, that didn’t spot Lia and I from turning this into a challenge to see what we could create! Our snack mix was so good and it’s easy to turn into an on-the-go snack!
I’m relieved to see that even experienced bakers like Lia and you have a bake fail once in a while. Your own version does look fabulous though! So I wanna say it wasn’t a fail but a refined version. Yay, you!
Oh I like that Tamara, a refined version. I probably shouldn’t have called it a fail because everything can be turned around! It was delicious too.
I can’t say that I’ve never had recipes turn into “other things”. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Maybe the sugar syrup just didn’t get as think as corn syrup, but ether way, I’m glad you turned it into something yummy! You’re teaching Lia that you can make lemonade from lemons!
Laurie
The sugar syrup went in the base part and that was okay, it was just the chocolate coating that failed. But yes, I love being able to teach Lia how things that don’t turn out can be made into something else Laurie. I taught a “boo-boo class in 4-H sewing. It was so much fun helping the kids fix a sewing boo-boo and no one was the wiser.
These all look and sounds yummy. I know little miss sunshine must of had a lot of un making them.
Oh yes, little Ms. Sunshine is quite the baker Brenda, she even makes her own recipes at times!
Martha, that’s a classic, isn’t it: find a way to turn a total fail into something you can use. My late husband told a story of himself when a small child. His mom asked him to carry a package that contained a very fancy layered pie from a Famous Hollywood Bakery. He forgot what it was and held the bag by the handles, causing the pie to go head over applecore. His mom (calmly?) chopped it all up and served it as English trifle. Ta dah! And your snack mix sounds tasty!
What a creative way to “repair” the pie Kebba! When we put our thinking cap on, the creative juices start flowing. Lia had fun chopping the pieces up and yes it was delicious!
I’m glad that you and Lia were able to turn a recipe disaster into a tasty treat!!! Great job!!!
I kinda think I like the snack pieces better than if it were bars Alice. Sometimes it’s easier to grab a handful of a snack mix instead of a cut piece of something. We are both looking forward to your blogs.
The title caught me a little off guard because I usually see very successful recipe posts. However, when I read on, just as I suspected you and Lia were able to use your genius and create something even more fabulous than expected. Thank you for the sweet treat! Sending lots of love and virtual hugs! Jaime
We don’t give up on anything Jaime! Lia had fun chopping the mixture into bit sized prices and it tastes so good. I guess this is just another challenge in me, I have to be creative if a problem arises.
Once I read the headline of this blog I thought about a time I made cookies and it didn’t turn out right. It’s okay to make mistakes and try again or even to take your mistake and make something better.
That’s how I feel too Amanda. We can’t always have things turn out the way we think, it turns a mistake into a challenge!
