Paint the Kitchen

We are up to Day 10 of the Cornerstone Content Blog Challenge, a third of the way completed! Today’s topic is content that motivates you and that’s what happened when Alexandra suggested we should paint the kitchen.

About a year ago we repainted the entire downstairs in mostly gray. The accent wall in the computer room and TV room were red. We also painted the laundry room red which is on the other end of the kitchen and can be seen from the TV room so it goes good with red on each end.

The only room we didn’t paint was the kitchen which was a medium blue but looked okay with the gray. Or so we thought until the other day when Alex asked if we really liked the blue. She thought we should carry the gray throughout the kitchen over to where the red laundry room is.

So talk about motivation, the next morning Rich got the can of left over gray paint out and he and Lia started painting! Alex joined in and we had a full painting party.

Of course Lia jumped right in and helped paint the higher parts as she stood on the counter and demonstrated the correct way to paint by going “side to side.” If you listen close to the video you will hear her telling you her technique.

A few hours into painting Rich and I had to run to Lowes to get a few more brushes and since it was almost lunch time we stopped at McDonald’s so we didn’t have to stop to make lunch.

We were only gone maybe an hour but when we got home and went to the kitchen Alex had it almost all painted! (She loaded up with caffeine shots. LOL)

By late afternoon the entire kitchen was painted and the gray looked so bright. I was now motivated to de-clutter the counters and the top of the cabinets!

Rich was cleaning off the top of the refrigerator and you never know what you will find up there! He came across one of Lia’s party hats from her 1st birthday and Lia said, “Put it on pop!” Gosh do we have stuff hidden everywhere.

After the newly painted kitchen and the de-cluttered countertops I loved our new look. But you know the saying “one thing leads to another” well that’s just what happened in the kitchen. Looking at our 21 year old Formica countertops with stains from putting hot pans on it just didn’t seem to hit it now that the rest of the kitchen looked so good.

So we are now on the hunt for new granite countertops and hopefully we’ll find the perfect one to pull this all together. We already know what will be after that, we will either re-face the cabinets or paint them. But one step at a time to keep us motivated to complete this kitchen transformation that started out to just paint the walls.

  6. Martha, I know that feeling of motivation you’re experiencing! As you say, “one thing leads to another”. I like to paint one wall at a time, since we have a small space and can’t tape off a room for very long. Now we too are looking for countertop materials– but I think it will be the manufactured “quartz”, which seems to be less expensive, tougher than the granite and requiring less care. I love the video of Lia telling us to paint side-to-side; what an awesome adult she will be!

We actually looked into the Quartzite also Kebba. We were told the granite is more durable for putting hot pots on and only needs sealing once a year compared to twice a year on the quartzite. The other thing I was hesitant about with that is the large “swirls”. The ones we looked at had beautiful patterns but most had a solid end to them. Our countertop area isn’t that large and I worry about have a swirl or pattern than a blob of solid. We’re in the checking everything out twice, I don’t want to make the wrong decision as something so permanent.

It’s looking really good, and it’s certainly a group project!!! I especially enjoyed watching Lia’s painting technique!

    • Martha says:

Thanks Alice! Group projects are the best when you have a family like ours! I loved Lia’s painting technique. We always have to have the camera or video ready when she’s around. LOL

  8. There’s some sort of resurfacing they can do for old countertops. You might look into that. Some of my friends with granite complain about it but friends with marble have complaints too. Maybe nothing is perfect out there. My Corian is getting pretty scratched up, but I’ll live with it a while longer.

  9. Amanda Gene says:

Great color you picked out. Lia you did a great job painting. Next time I paint something I will go side to side. 🙂

I love the gray throughout the downstairs Amanda, it is such a great color that goes with everything. Lia says, “thank you and glad you enjoyed the video.”
