Our Kitchen is De-Cluttered

I’m so excited to see that our kitchen is de-cluttered! Back in January I participated in a 5 Day De-Stress Your Mess Challenge. I’m not stopping until the house and garage have been organized and de-cluttered.

I was so pleased when we completed the first room upstairs that use to be our granddaughter and grandson’s playroom about 15 years ago! It had become a catch-all for everything that “someday” I was going to do something with. http://themarthareview.com/de-clutter-one-room-at-a-time/

After that was completed we turned my computer room/office into my great granddaughter’s playroom. Lia’s Princess Playroom turned out so adorable and I get rid of so many unneeded items!

Just before Christmas Alexandra mentioned we should paint the kitchen gray to match the rest of the rooms and that started the wheels spinning.

With the new paint color the kitchen looked so bright and I had reorganized the counters since we had a good start, the kitchen was the next room to be tackle.. But we didn’t just de-clutter, we went a few steps farther. We decided to have new cabinets and granite countertops installed. We started emptying the cupboards one at a time and purging so much stuff! Everything went in boxes and they were stacked in the TV room, the eating area, the garage and even Lia’s new playroom! I never realized we had SO MUCH STUFF WE DIDN’T EVEN USE!!

We went to look at granite and found one that we liked called Luna Pearl that went well with the gray walls and white cabinets. When they came out to measure we decided to have them measure for the cabinets just to have an idea on price. I called them back on Friday and told them we were ready to go with the granite but would hold off on the cabinets. That evening Rich told me to call them back and do the entire project. What a great Valentine’s Day and almost Birthday gift for me!

The first step was demolishing the old countertops and cabinets. They hauled everything away and I was thinking the entire time, “maybe we could use these old cabinets in the garage!” I knew the garage was overloaded and there was no place to even store them until we could organize that so I opted to just keep one four drawer cabinet for the garage. After all the idea is to DE-CLUTTER not add more cabinets in the garage to attract more clutter! They stacked all the new cabinets in the kitchen until the next day when the installer arrived to hang them.

We only made a few changes from the old ones but I like the change. We got 36″ high cabinets inside of 30″ and we had a corner cabinet instead of straight ones where we had blind areas and wasted space. As Lia was helping unload the blind cabinets, she found a few glasses we left behind! She checked them out and all is clear!

Cabinets are installed, the molding is up and I love the extend height! Now I won’t be tempted to put unneeded items on top of the cabinets! The granite installer came out to make a template at this point.

Now it’s time for the granite installation plus a new sink and faucet to be installed! Carefully the two countertop installers brought in the tops and it was so exciting to see the kitchen transformation. I like the brushed nickel door and drawer handles and the faucet is the same.

It was time to restock the cabinets but even though we had already tossed or donated the things not needed, I was able to purge a few more things. It felt so good to see well organized cabinets! Under the sink looks so organized now compared to before! I even put a cabinet mat under the sink!

Lia even has her own baking cabinet with all the supplies she needs for her cakes, cookies and breads! She’s ready to get back to baking again!

Our kitchen is de-cluttered! I like the red accents, I love the clutter-free countertops and especially like the corner cabinet! My goal is to keep them that way! I’m having such a great time since joining the De-Stress your Mess challenge and I’m going through the house room by room! The next project will be the pantry and I saved some drawers from the kitchen project and I have a plan for them. Stay tuned for the next episode of De-Stress your Mess!

Thank you so much Jeanine! I’ve always been a “saver” but it’s time to move on and go for the clean, uncluttered look. When Lia came home after the kitchen was complete, she looked at the countertops p and said, “we have a new table!” When pop turned the faucet on and she said, “we have new water” when she saw the faucet. She doesn’t miss anything!

Looks fabulous. Enjoy your new kitchen.

  5. My old home had been redone- so the kitchen went from 4 feet by 8 feet to 20 feet by 35 feet. It was obviously NOT cluttered at all. When I downsized, the kitchen was all of a sudden 10 feet by 6 feet. Keeping kosher means at least two sets of dishes, at least two sets of pots and pans- plus paraphernalia. Even if my kitchen were clean, it would be cluttered. (Yes, I have FOUR sets of dishes, not just two. And, a slew of special cooking utensils. Oh, for a larger kitchen….)

I love the large kitchens with islands Roy! But we all have to do with what we have and I’m happy I’m finally in the de-cluttering mode. I can’t believe all I’ve saved through out the years!

  6. Your kitchen looks fantastic! What a wonderful transformation. Lia is going to love baking in that new kitchen! 🙂 I have been seeing so many videos about repainting cabinets, I’m seriously thinking of painting my kitchen cabinets white. After seeing your kitchen, well, I’m inspired!!

We actually we playing to repaint them Angie bit they were over 20 years old and not the greatest shape, some shelves were up with L brackets, not bad for builder quality but I’m so pleased with the outcome. I like the white, they seems to keep the small kitchen more open and spacious.

  9. I try to pretend I’m organized by hiding all my clutter in the closets. Finally, we’ve reached the point where STUFF is bursting out. Time to buckle down and move some of it out to new homes.
Your kitchen with that corner cabinet looks awesome.
