Oatmeal for Breakfast

Do you like oatmeal? When I was a young girl I remember my grandmother would make oatmeal for breakfast. My grandfather would always cover his oatmeal with milk so I would do the same. To this day I still add milk to my oatmeal. The oatmeal my grandmother made wasn’t the instant kind like we have today, she would cook a big pot full and load it with butter and sugar.

Today seems like we are in a hurry and the instant oatmeal is quicker and easier to make. It also comes in a different flavors so if one family member wants plain but other wants cinnamon or another flavor, you just have to get a few different boxes.

But I came up with a solution where I just get the original instant oatmeal and I doctor it up to my taste buds! I start with a bowl of original oatmeal and when cooked I add a few pats of butter and milk.

My favorite is to top it with cinnamon but I also love to add Smuckers Fruit Spread to my oatmeal.

I take a small amount of the jelly and microwave it until it’s a bit soupy then drizzle over my cooked oatmeal. It’s so good, I like to top mine with strawberry or raspberry fruit spread!

You can even top your oatmeal with fresh or frozen berries. Instead of buying the boxes of blueberry or strawberry instant oatmeal that has little bitty specks of fruit, I add full sized berries!

These fresh/frozen berries are good to have on hand not only for oatmeal topping but for fruit smoothies also!

I always buy Quaker Oatmeal, the same brand my grandmother would use. It is 100% whole grains, low in saturated fat and cholesterol which is considered heart healthy. It’s also a good source of fiber and has no preservatives, artificial flavors or added colors.

So next time you want a variety of oatmeal flavors just buy the original and come up with your own delicious ways to flavor it. Oatmeal for breakfast is a great way to start your day!

  1. I love having oatmeal for breakfast. I will also sometimes have smoothies and after this post, I wonder about smoothies WITH oatmeal included. Right now I have protein bites in my frig which also include oatmeal. When I was a little girl, I was the only child of six who enjoyed oatmeal. Always made my tummy warm and happy on winter mornings.

Oatmeal still makes my tummy warm and happy Julie! It’s the one breakfast food that sticks with me and I don’t get hunger pains immediately after like some foods.

  3. I haven’t ingested oatmeal per se in some 60 years- or more. Grits- yes. Oats added to a dish- also yes.

    • Martha says:

I love oatmeal and also grits but I don’t eat them like a true southern Roy. I love to load mine up with butter and sugar! Yes this is the one thing I add sugar too!

  4. Hi Martha, when I was teaching for 20 years, instant oatmeal was my go-to breakfast to give me energy to get through the morning with lots of kids. I have not had any oatmeal since I switched careers to authoring. However, your post has inspired me to try the kind you made, which is the same I ate as a kid. Thank you for sharing. Sending lots of love and hugs. Jaime

Something about Quaker Oats Jaime! Of course we also love to make oatmeal cookies and add cranberries to them! Go have some oatmeal and bring back memories!

  5. I have always stayed away from oatmeal because of the carbs, but maybe I should rethink that!~

    • Martha says:

Well like anything, eatting in moderation is fine for me Angie. It’s also the only thing that sticks to my tummy and doesn’t make me hungry right after I’ve eaten it.

My son loves the Quaker oatmeal packets.. As for me, of late, we enjoy steel cut oats (take longer to cook but love the nuttiness) and top it with granola and fresh fruits
Love the idea of adding some fresh fruit spread ..

    • Martha says:

Oh I’ve heard of steel cut oats Vidya, I do have to check them out! The packets are quick and easy to whip up and so many ways to add toppings!

  7. I am an oatmeal person. I love your suggestions to doctor it up!

  8. Martha, I keep forgetting I have oatmeal around! I do have plain oats, plus that luscious instant apple-cinnamon oatmeal in packets, in a box. The only fruit I put with oatmeal is apple bits, plus the cinnamon, but I can definitely see the lusciousness of your fruity oatmeal! Thanks for the reminder!

    • Martha says:

That’s what I love about oatmeal Kebba, so many toppings can be added and makes it like you have a different meal every time you eat oatmeal!

  9. Danwil R. says:

I love to eat oatmeal. First, it is healthy, and second, it makes me full if I wanted a heavy breakfast.

  10. Amanda Gene says:

I don’t care for oatmeal, but I do like cream of wheat.

    • Martha says:

I use to eat cream of wheat when I was younger but I prefer oatmeal Amanda. Since we moved south, grits is the think here too, almost like the consistency of cream of wheat.
