No Heavy Whipping Cream

I’m stretching today’s Ultimate Blog suggested topic. It is to write about something that shows a mistake that you made and how you worked through it. The other day Lia wanted to make ice cream and we got all ready but realized we had no heavy whipping cream! Now I could tell Lia we have to wait for another day but once she has her apron on and ready to bake or cook, there is no during back! So this is how we remedied the situation.

We had the milk, sugar, vanilla flavoring, and OH NO, WE HAVE NO HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM!! As I looked at Lia and told her we have to wait until we go to the store, her big eyes said otherwise. So I had to come up with a solution and quick for my mistake of saying we would make ice cream without checking the ingredients first!

So my brain went challenge mode to see what I could use to substitute for the heavy whipping cream. Looking through the cupboard, I found condensed milk and decided we’d give that a try! So Lia was happy that she could be back to making our chocolate ice cream.

Lia started mixing all the ingredients together then we churned it in the ice cream maker. After it was all churned it wasn’t as thick as using heavy whipping cream but it sure was good for a taste test. We put it in a container and in the freezer for a few hours. When we sampled it it was so good! The condensed milk gave it a very sweet taste even though the consistency was more like a milkshake.

But after freezing it over night, the ice cream hardened and it passed the taste test for sure! Even though we had no whipping cream, the condensed milk saved the day and worked through my mistake. We will be making ice cream again soon so I already have heavy whipping cream on my shopping list! The moral of this story is check the ingredients needed before getting excited about making something! Would you like a sample with or without whipped topping and cake batter sprinkles?

The ice cream looks delicious to me. Could I have one with and one without whipped topping and sprinkles? Lia sure has big eyes.

  2. Martha, I’ve been there. Early in your post, I was wondering if you had sweetened condensed milk, or condensed milk, that you could switch in. Yes! What a fun experiment that turned out great. Yay for both of you!

Hi Martha and Lia, good challenge for you and it turned out nice. I made ice cream about 30 years ago at Girl Scout Camp using a bunch odd things like a coffee can, bowl of ice, and random fruity ingredients from foraging. I don’t remember how it turned out, but I never tried it that way again. Maybe I will have to try a machine and a list of ingredients and try some homemade ice cream again. Thank you for sharing. Sending lots of love and hugs. Jaime

Oh my, you brought back memories Jaime! I remember making ice cream in Girl Scout camp also but don’t remember much about how it turned out either!
