National Seashell Day

Today is National Seashell Day so I thought I would share some information on South Carolina’s official state seashell. Since 1984 the state seashell has been the lettered olive also known as Oliva Sayana. Dr. Edmund Ravenel of Charleston, South Carolina found and named the lettered olive seashell. https://statesymbolsusa.org/symbol-official-item/south-carolina/state-fish-aquatic-life/lettered-olive

Lettered olives can be found all along the South Carolina coast and every time we go to the beach we find a hand full of them. Rich has a hand full of olive shells we collected during one of the hurricanes that went through South Carolina.

We also have a jar filled with the lettered olive seashell that my mom and dad had picked up over the years when they lived by the ocean. The bottle of shells bring back memories of my mom and dad.

Strolling down the beach along South Carolina coast you can find a variety of seashells and sea creatures! After a storm is a good time to collect seashells. When collecting shells make sure you never pickup a live one. Sometimes the beaches are filled with starfish but if you see any that are still alive, please leave it alone! They are beautiful to photograph but they will return to the ocean on their own.

I hope you enjoyed the seashells I shared for National Seashell Day but I also have another post to share. Since today is Father’s Day, I want to wish all the dad’s and those who take over as dad a very Happy Father’s Day.

Five years ago my granddaughter wrote a post to her grandfather and it was written from her heart. My hubby has been “papa” to Alex from the day she was born, over 25 years ago. http://themarthareview.com/thoughts-from-our-granddaughter/ TISSUE ALERT FOR THIS BLOG

Seashells are fun to collect and look at. I used to collect them when I was little.
