National Kindergarten Day 2001
Did you know today is National Kindergarten Day? I found this out last year and I wrote a blog about my Kindergarten days why back in 1954. Yes, I said 1954, most of you weren’t even thought of that year! This is the blog I wrote about my memories: http://themarthareview.com/national-kindergarten-day/ When I saw the day pop up again this year on my news feed, it brought up memories of another year. Today I’m writing about memories of National Kindergarten Day 2001 when my now 22-year-old granddaughter was 5 years old.
Alexandra started “working” with us at our interior decorating shop when she was about six weeks old. She was a fixture in our store, just like a sewing machine or bolts of fabrics.
**************My hubby would pick Alex up and bring her to “work” and our customers loved her, stopping in just to say hi to her. Helping to stuff pillows and learning to sew were her favorite jobs. She worked hard for five years but then spring of 2001 came about, it was time to register Alexandra for Kindergarten for the fall. Our “full-time employee” of five years would no longer be coming in early in the morning, putting smiles on people’s faces or helping around the shop.
Just before she started Kindergarten, we had a “retirement party” for Alexandra with a cake and all. When she started school the end of August 2001, her work duties became part-time and hubby would pick her up from school and bring her back to our shop to work second shift!
When Alexandra got back to the shop, she would pull out a piece of chalkboard fabric and start teaching her 3-year-old brother his numbers and letters when she wasn’t at the sewing machine stitching away and the customers would still stop in to ask her how Kindergarten was going.
It’s been 64 years since I started Kindergarten and 17 years since Alexandra started but both of these memories are still so fresh in my mind! Did you know today is National Kindergarten Day and what memories do you have for you or your children?

Martha, totally love these posts where you share personal memories.. and did not know about National Kindergarten Day so thank you. need to go look at those old photos myself now
I’m glad you enjoy them Vidya, I come up with so many wonderful memories when I hear about a special day, see a flower or look through my old photos. I’m thinking I could do the monthly challenge using the different National Days! Maybe I’ll do that next one! Thanks for stopping by, have fun looking through your photos!
I didn’t know, either! What a sweet story!! I remember my kindergarten days, but what stands out are some of the negative memories. Like when my kindergarten teacher got mad at me for coloring a woman whose dress was the same color of her skin. Brown is one of my favorite colors and I often wear a brown top with brown pants. So there, kindergarten teacher.
How I remember the times when Alex was young and she was a “fixture” in our store. I think she was the youngest ever to retire at age five! LOL You tell your teacher Jeanine, that wasn’t very kind of her to get mad over what color clothing you wore! I have another memory of Alex when she would get to kindergarten late, her teacher would open the large window to her room and she would enter through the window! Oh the fun memories 17 years ago!
