National Farmers Day
Farmers have one of the oldest and most important professions. On October 12, National Farmers Day is celebrated for the hard work the farmers put in year round to provide us with food and it also helps keep our economy thriving.
Farmers work endlessly long and hard to provide food for the nation and also contribute to the economy. They keep both large and small communities going and many businesses rely on agriculture such as farmers markets, grocery stores, restaurants, beverages, apparel, leather trucking, railroad, and foresty to name a few.
Since October is near the end of harvest season, it’s seems perfect to celebrate Farmers Day in this month.
Some farmers grow fruits and vegetables, some raise animals for food and milk while others grow corn and hay to supply the farmers with food for the animals they raise. A farmer is a farmer no matter what their duties are.
My aunt and uncle had a large dairy farm in upstate New York when I was growing up. How I remember when visiting with my cousins, helping milk the cows, collect the eggs from their chickens and ride the wagon to gather up the bails of hay from the fields. I wish I had some pictures from back over 60 years ago but I great memories drinking the milk right from the cow or cold from the ice box, scooping off the layer of cream.
There are farmers that plant crops of corn or hay for their own animals or to supply other farmers. My friend from upstate New York just finished loading their last hay wagon of the year! Thanks to Marilyn Frear Hollenbeck for these photos and my feature photo also!
Fruit and vegetable farms come in all sizes. Some are large commercial farms to supply grocery stores, restaurants, and other businesses while others have smaller gardens that sell to the locals through farmer’s markets. I love visiting the local farmer’s markets to support our local farmers.
We can’t forget our flower growing farmers! Without them I wouldn’t be able to get these awesome pictures of Rich’s roses or the pictures of Lia surrounded by flowers!
So for all the farmers out there that work round the clock, in all kinds of weather and hope and pray for good crops, my family and I thank you!
Great pics! are some of them family? That little girl is soooooo cute. I grew up on a farm in North Dakota. Farmers work harder than anyone. The Day starts before dawn and sometimes end much after dark. I have hauled countless hay bales, (the picture of the hay bales reminded me) and I remember driving a combine at 2 in the morning because it was the wheat was dry and the dew hadn’t set in to make the straw too tough. It was always a race against time to get the crops in on time and to harvest before it was too cold and the snow flew. Once again — Great pictures!!
Thanks Douglas, the littel one is our 5th great grandbaby. She already has so much personality in her tiny body. You described farms perfectly but so many don’t realize that! Thanks for visiting!
