National Cherish an Antique Day
Today is National Cherish an Antique Day and the first thing that came to my mind was my dear sweet hubby. It use to be said anything over 50 years was an antique, well hubby is 73 years old and I’ve been with him for 55 years so I guess that covers antique status! I think I have preserved him very well over the years.
But I also have a few other antiques that I cherish, one being a Christening gown dating back from 1907 and a wall hanging from about the 1940’s. These are a few antiques I cherish and will pass down to my granddaughter so she can pass them down to her daughter.
Christening Gown
My maternal grandmother made a silk Christening gown in 1907 and all her seven children wore it. My mother was then given the gown when she had children. My two sisters and I wore it when Christened and when I married and had our first child she wore this beautiful gown on her Christening day. After our second daughter wore the gown, my mother entrusted me with the gown and when our oldest daughter got married, her children would be next in line.
When my mother presented me with this gown, she also had a handwritten letter addressed to our daughters explaining the gown’s history.
This beautiful hand sewn, cherished Christening gown went through four generations from my grandmother’s children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
After our grandchildren were born I never even thought about another generation coming along. I wrote a blog in 2016 about the Christening Gown Passed Down Through Generations. But now it’s time to update that blog.
When my great granddaughter was born in 2018 the Christening gown was once again ready to be carefully brought out. The gown was 111 years old but still in excellent condition. Lia looked like a little Angel in the gown when she was blessed in March 2019. A beautiful antique Christening gown to cherish and pass down for future generations to come.
Sunbonnet Sue Wall Hanging
Another cherished antique I have is a wall hanging that my mom made. I don’t have the exact date on this but I thinking my mom embroidered the panels in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. Look at the perfect hand embroidered stitches all around her little dress and hat. They are so perfect it looks like machine stitches! Around the early 1980’s a friend of mine added the fabric banding and turned three panels into a wall hanging. this wall hanging is hanging in our stairway, waiting to be turned over to my granddaughter and then she will pass it down to Lia. Again, a cherished antique that will hopefully see many more generations.
Do you have a special cherished antique that has been passed down through the years?
Martha, I loved this post. The christening gown is just beautiful and little Lia is adorable. Your comments about your hubby warmed my heart! Thank you for sharing. I’m a quilter, so I enjoyed the Sunbonnet Sue as well.
When I decided on this topic, I thought adding about my hubby would give people a little smile. Glad you enjoyed Sunbonnet Sue and the christening gown. Thanks for visiting!
I love that wall hanging! So dear. And those pictures of you and your “antique” hubby are so sweet. Thanks for sharing your antiques.
I had to add hubby as my favorite and most cherished antique Jeanine! I think it also made my readers smile! Thanks for visiting.
I loved the antique dress Lia doeslook like an angel in it.Your moms wall hanging is stunning
Lia is our little earth angel for sure Amrita. I’m sure my grandmother is looking down smiling knowing that her christening gown is still being used.
Martha…
oh my!!!! LOVE this post today…precious and valuable memories. How amazing is it that you have the letter and the Christening gown still today.
That picture of Ms. Lia is priceless!!!!
I had a feeling you would love this post Nancy! It’s right up your alley!
your wall hanging made me think of Holly Hobby….wait is she considered an antique yet? Oh my dolls I grew up with….ahem…..I’m almost an antique I guess- you kept your “antiques” well preserved yes! And Lia looks very sweet in the antique christening dress.
Now that you mention it, Sue does remind me of Holly also. Wasn’t she “born” around the 70’s? Yep getting antique status there Pamela! LOL
What a wonderful story about the Christening Gown — worn now by a great, great, great-grandchild (and she is a cutie)! And congrats on 55 years married! 🙂
Thank you Angela, everytime another little wears this gown, I think of my grandmother!
What a beautiful gown and Lia is so pretty. As for the wall hanging I loved it and it reminded me of the quilts my grandmother used to make which I wish I had.
I’m so glad I have these heirlooms to pass down to Alexandra and then Lia. Thanks for visiting Glenda.
Very sweet blog post.
Thanks Amanda, I’m so glad I have these memories to pass down to Lia!
