My Pasta Fazool Recipe
Every January I stop shopping for food and clean out the freezers and pantry. I think I over stuffed the freezer since becoming members of Costco and Sam’s Club because I still have enough food to probably go half way through February! Since I’ve been freezing individual meal portions it’s easier to plan a meal or meals without having a lot of leftovers.
However for some meals I still have a few leftovers. The other day I make pasta fazool from my mother-in-law’s recipe, it’s so quick and easy to make and I had enough left over for one meal.
There are so many recipes for pasta fazool or pasta fagioli which some call it. This is a traditional pasta and been Italian dish. Pasta fagioli is more like a soup with a thinner broth and past fazool is thicker, more like a stew. Fazool comes from the Neapolitan dialect for beans and my husband’s family is from Naples.
This is made from simple ingredients, cooks up quick and so good and filling! This is my recipe which is doctored up from my mother-in-law’s recipe. The recipe made enough for three good sized bowls with a small amount left for another meal.
Pasta Fazool Recipe
1 small piece of ground beef (I added a piece about the size of a large meatball), crumble and brown in avocado oil. I also make this without the meat at times.
Add a jar of chunky spaghetti sauce, half a jar of water (or tomato paste with water and a can of diced tomatoes) to the cooked ground beef.
Add a can of great northern beans, slightly drained.
Add ditalini pasta in boiled water and cook until tender but not mushy. Drain and add desired amount to the other ingredients.
This is the best I can do since I don’t measure when I make meals.
Add spices to taste.
So yesterday I pulled the leftovers out of the fridge and there was only enough for one meal. So what did I do? I boiled up some ditalini, added that to a can of tomato paste with 2 cans of water and poured that into the leftover pasta fazool. That made enough for two more meals!
I love quick, easy and delicious meals and my pasta fazool recipe is a great one anytime but especially great on chilly days.
Ok I laughed out loud at this. Today is my daughters birthday, and we had dinner that night at Olive Garden where my husband got sick on this soup. I’m sure yours is delicious, but we can’t eat this ever again. He kept leaving the room to go to the bathroom. It’s a story we tell every year!
OMG I’m so sorry your hubby got sick! I’ve never had anyone get sick on mine! LOL
Your pasta looks good. I don’t mind tasting it right now if I could :-). Thank you for sharing the recipe.
The recipe is so easy and the meal is so filling Danwil.

Hope you made it and enjoyed it Cheryl!
I had to stop by to see what you were cooking up today! This sounds great, and I believe I have all the ingredients in my pantry right now. (Except for the pasta, I may need to substitute with elbow macaroni!)
Actually I’ve been having problems finding ditalini in stores Angie and elbows work just as well.
That looks so good.
Delicious and easy to make Amanda.
Martha, I love it! I pretty much love Italian food of all kinds, including the spices. Thanks for a fun recipe.
The great thing about added spices to any dish is you can add to your liking! It’s quick, easy and delicious Kebba.
Sounds so very delish.. and learned a new word today.. I will try it (meatless version, of course) soon..
Actually when my mother in law would make this, she never used the meat Vidya!
