My Grandfather’s Boot Rack
My Grandfather’s Boot Rack
Way back, probably in the 1960’s or maybe even before that, my grandfather made a boot rack. It was a simple rack, had a base with feet and six dowels to hold the boots. I can remember it always being on the porch and we would take our snow boots off and put them on the boot holder so the snow would melt off and drip on the cement floor rather than inside the boot. We lived in the country so another reason why we would hang our boots upside down was to keep the field mice out of them! I didn’t think much of it back then but when we relocated, the boot rack came with us. It has been in our storage room at work since 1994. Two of the boot dowels were off but we used it for storing our large rolls of plastic bags so they weren’t needed. Now over 50 years later, I pulled the boot rack out of the back room and brought it home. Hubby got a dowel and cut it to fit the two empty spots but he made them a bit higher since one pair of my boots go to my knee. By making the dowel higher, the boots fit perfect. I planned to paint it but that will come on a warm day since I was anxious to use it for our boots.
It works just like I remember back when I was a child! It not only is good for drying the boots off but it’s good to now have a spot to store our boots. It’s narrow and doesn’t take up much space so it fits perfect in the front of the garage. If anyone is looking for a way to store your boots, this is an easy project for you.
I love finding these “memory gems” and putting them back in use. I’ll always think of Pa when I grab my boots.
How awesome that you still have it! I never seen one before Buy I am from Alabama and we really don`t get snow.
My grandfather was so creative and come up with very unique things. We are now in South Carolina and no snow, but it’s a great space saver for our hurricane boots. Thanks for stopping by Andria!
I really love this little piece and see myself making one when the weather warms to the point I can work outside!
It’s simple to make but a very handy rack. I’m so glad I brought it down south when we moved over 20 years ago! Thanks for stopping by Becky and if you make one, would love to see photos!
Now that there is only me, I think I could install two dowels at an angle on the deck bars right outside the door.
That would work Irene, be creative! Thanks for stopping by.
