My Final Reorganization Project

I have been decluttering, reorganizing, moving things around and tossing them since April. I was so happy when I got the garage all cleaned out and organized. But there is one thing I have kept under wraps since August! My final reorganization project is ready to be revealed! I had to wait because I wanted to surprise Chris and Bryon, you don’t know how hard it was to not tell anyone about this project!

Back when Alex was about 4 years old, she wanted a pink room, bubble gum pink! So of course Pop handled that. Then when she was maybe 12 she decided to change it to teal, so that was the next color that stayed and turned into Lia’s room. See her tiny head peaking over the mattress? LOL I think she was maybe 2 years old.

When Alex and Lia moved to Indiana the end of March I decided to declutter the room and get rid of the things Alex didn’t take with her. I also wanted to make it more of a guest room for my daughter and son-in-law. From April until August I sorted out things in Alex’s closet and then my next project began in August.

I thought this was going to be a quick room makeover when I ordered a platform with storage for the mattress. I was excited to get it and put it together. The instructions said it would be easier with two people and would take about 4 hours to build it. It only took me a little over three hours and I got everything in order before I secured it together. The trickiest part was flopping the mattress on the platform, that would have been easier with two people. LOL I love how it has storage all across the foot and each side has a center storage drawer. The entire base is upholstered so no worries about sticking things under the bed and forgetting about them. I removed the fuchsia panels on the window, left the white sheers and added a cream comforter. That is all I planned to do, I thought it would be an inviting guest room until I got talking with my neighbor about maybe someday I’d paint the room gray.

Well April had other ideas, she came over on a Friday and said, “We’ll paint the room Sunday.” Say what?? I had just casually mentioned about painting it when she went full steam ahead! LOL I run to Sherwin Williams and picked up a gallon of Essential Gray and early Sunday morning April and I put our painting caps on! We got it finished in about three hours without rushing. Once I saw it completed I was so happy with the softness of the gray and how it would go with so many accessories.

I purchased a multi striped black, gray, white comforter set and added a few gray pillows. The round table on the left side was the one from when this was Alex’s room, I just updated the table skirt. The dresser was Lia’s and stored in the closed until I found the perfect spot on the right side of the bed. I wanted to add a few “fan” things since Bryon is a San Francisco 49er’s fan and Chris is Alabama Crimson Tide fan so I found a few things to add to the room. Bryon likes eagles and Chris likes lighthouses, polar bears, and owls so I decorated the table and a small shelf with my thrift shop finds.

The team hanging lamps were the finishing touch (I do have to adjust the cords so they hang in the corner of the walls) and I found a lighthouse fan pull at a local shop. I also spray painted the 30 year old oak colored fan blades a gray shade that matches the walls perfectly.

I was super pleased with how the room was turning out but I needed something else…. team pillows! So I ordered fabric from Etsy and made them each a puffy pillow with fuzzy Minky fur on the back.

With the extra fabric I made a wall hanging from the Alabama fabric and I even had two small scrap pieces leftover to make covers for the bar stools (free from Market Place) so they can be used as snack tables. When Chris and Bryon arrived this past weekend they were both totally surprised and loved their “fan” room.

When Alex and Lia come visit, I will transform the room to Lia’s favorite purple and pink coverlet. Her stuffed animals are a perfect addition to turn the room into a little girl’s room. I also have a unicorn hanging lamp that she had in her playroom and I will change out the football lamps for that.

The third option which I don’t have finished pictures of is to use the white comforter with shades of blue pillows to bring out the colors in the canvas print over the bed. I’m still working on this option but I think with the white comforter and white sheers it would be a very soft look.

I’m so happy with all my accomplishments I have completed around the house and it feels so much better to see less clutter!

  1. Oh, how wonderful!! What a great surprise. I love the room and how well everything goes together. And now, i’m wishing I had a round table for my bedroom.

Chris and Bryon were so surprised when they opened the bedroom door Jeanine. I was as excited as them to see their reactions. The little round table is probably 25 years old! LOL

    Martha – what wonderful transformations!!
It’s so fun that you’ve thought of all these different options!
I had a teal wall in my dining nook that I so loved in my old house, and sometimes miss but the soft Grey is so relaxing for a bedroom!
    Well done

Thanks Nadya, yes the teal was okay for a teenager but gray is much better to go with numerous options for comforters. Now each guest will have their own look.

  3. OMG – Martha, that is wonderful! I love the options you have created. I know what I’m going to do this weekend. I was wondering how I could use my kids’ rooms as their own and also as a guestroom – you just provided the solution! THANK YOU!

Martha, you really outdid yourself this time! I saw your pictures on Facebook and immediately wanted to invite myself over to stay.
And I had to laugh so hard at this part: “the instructions said it would be easier with two people and would take about four hours to build.”
Martha be like: “Hold my beer” (I know you don’t drink, but let’s keep the saying as is 😉). “I can do this alone and still finish faster!”

LOL, I like your comment about “hold my beer” Tamara. I was so happy with the results of this room and my daughter and son-in-law loved their football hanging lamps and pillows! Come on over anytime, just let me know which comforter set you prefer!

An amazing room transformation with three comfortable versions, I love how you created different versions that match the guests who will be using the room. You are so thoughtful! You inspire me.

Thanks Cheryl, since I had to share the different colors of the bedding, I thought the gray walls would be the safest color. I love how soft and soothing it is now.

You’re doing a great job with your reorganization project. The rooms look beautiful and clean. I also like the color of your walls. I’m sure your place will look much better when you’re done with your home cleaning and housekeeping.

Thanks Danwil, this was a fun project but it did take some time to rearrange the closet filled with my granddaughter’s leftover stuff from when she moved to Indiana. But I got it done and very happy with the results.

  7. Martha, wow wow wow! I love it! For several years, you have been attacking, clearing, and repainting different areas, making them look more harmonious and making them work better for you. I started noticing when you repainted the kitchen to gray (I believe)– what year was that? So now the bedroom and its closet– fantastic! I love the changes in the look of the room over the years. And the way you can switch out the linens and lamps for different looks is just wonderful. Wow!

Thanks Kebba! We actually started painting the downstairs gray in 2019 I think then we had knew kitchen cabinets and granite counter in 2021 followed by the new gray flooring. Since then we’ve done little things here and there but my projects this year kept me busy. I was so happy to get this room and the closet organized and Chris and Bryon were shocked when they opened the bedroom door. Something about gray, it goes with just about anything and it’s a soothing color for the bedroom. Lia wanted purple but her purple and pink comforter looks great with the gray! We are both into getting things done!
