Mom and Dad’s 79th Anniversary
Today would have been my mom and dad’s 79th anniversary, on October 16, 1943 they were married while my dad was home on leave from the Army. Their honeymoon was short as dad had to go back to protect our country during World War 2.
Mom and dad were together for over 56 years until Alzheimer’s took mom away from him on January 15, 2000. This left dad devasted as the two were always together. Six years later on January 20, 2006 dad joined mom once again to be together forever.
I talk to my parents all the time and see signs of them in the yard. When I see a yellow butterfly, it tells me that loved ones are near. This yellow one appeared in mom’s garden and just wouldn’t leave. According to Irish folklore when we see a yellow butterfly it means the departed souls of our loved ones are resting peacefully in their afterlife.
One of the gifts my parents received on their 50th wedding anniversary was this beautiful plate. When Rich and I celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2017, I felt so blessed when my younger sister gave us mom and dad’s plate. I cherish this gift like I do my parents.
Every year on their wedding anniversary I give special thanks to having such wonderful parents who gave their children love, understanding, taught them good values and how to be loving and giving.
This past July when we went to upstate New York, my two sisters and I had a mini reunion. One sister lives in New York, one in Maine and I’m in South Carolina so while we’ve each since each other at different times, we haven’t all three been together in over 20 some years. What a wonderful reunion we had and I know mom and dad were watching down smiling at all the love and silliness we share.
If tears could build a stairway and memories build a lane, I’d walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
Mom and dad, I know you are dancing in the heavens today as you celebrate your 79th wedding anniversary. I know you would still be proud of how well you raised your family and I know that one day we all will be together again. Until then, keep sending down signs and have a wonderful anniversary! Love you and miss you both so much, Martha
Awe, Martha, no wonder you have such great values and are an amazing human being. Your parents were prime examples of love for you and your sisters. What a blessing to have such cherished memories that continue to show up in nature as beautiful reminders of our dearly departed. Happy 50 to infinity Anniversary for your parents and you. Sending lots of love. Jaime
Thank you for the kind words Jaime. I have so many more memories tucked away and every now and then they appear at the right moment. Love back to you.
Martha, what a beautiful blog. I feel honored to get a glimpse into the love your parents shared and to see how it comes through in your blogs, the way you love and cherish the family you have created.
My parents taught me so much but the best was love. I hope that by me passing it on to Lia, she will continue to share the love for many generations to come. Thanks for visiting Kimberly.
Happy anniversary to your mom and dad in heaven. What a lovely tribute, Martha. Love your sisters T-shirts.
Thanks Lily, one day Rich and I will be back with them dancing on our anniversaries. I love the t-shirts too, they were a big surprise!
Hi Martha,
Your parents look so happy in the picture. It must be because they have three happy daughters.
We had a happy childhood Doug and in turn it became a happy adulthood. I’m hoping all this happiness stays with Lia and she continues to spread love and happiness.
Such a beautiful heart-warming post Martha.. and love that pic of you and your sisters…
Thank you Vidya, all these memories are still so special. It was great getting together with my sisters after all these years!
What a sweet blog post Martha. Sending you hugs.
Thanks Amanda, I keep all of mom and dad’s memories in my heart. Thanks for the hugs.
